Jules rang me to report that 70 teddy bears were transferred to St Vincent de Paul, Berry St, Greensborough Salvos, and Odyssey House after the Rotary Christmas Party. The teddies were welcomed with open arms and we are assured all placements will be completed this week as they bring some Christmas cheer to the hearts of children whose families are doing it tough. Thank you all Rotarians, but particularly Jules and Judy Aussems for your commitment to this great project every year. It is firmly established as an Eltham tradition with contributions from the Eltham Rural Group and also members who couldn’t make it to the party.
 
Our Christmas Party was a relaxed and fun way to wind-up the year and it would not have happened without the work of Mike Englefield teeing-up the venue, the set-up, the catering options, the bar and the clean-up; Ann Lynch sorting the bookings and seating, the dulcet tones of Roma and the Eltham Chorale; and the incomparable compering of Michael Martin.  Irene’s raffle was a resounding success and then thanks to David’s auctioneering skills (without any prior notice!) a bonus $500 was raised for the Rotary Foundation through Tanys’ re-donation of the Lorne weekend package.
 
Enjoy your Christmas and New Year celebrations with family and friends and we look forward to seeing you at Gary and Angela Williams’ for a BBQ on Thursday 19th Jan to kick start the 2017 program. Further details of this event and the social day on Sat 28th Jan at Graeme and Lyn Hardiman’s home on the peninsula will be emailed.

WEHI Fundraiser / Home Invasion

January 2017 will see us returning to one of our traditions with the first meeting for the year a social night at Gary and Angela Williams' home
 
Thursday 19th January from 6pm
Spit roast to be carved at 7pm
Cost $20 for members, $25 for non-members
Meat provided, Margot Kilcullen will co-ordinate members to contribute a salad or sweet.
BYO alcohol and glasses
 
All profits will be donated to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, an organisation supported by the Rotary Club of Eltham

WEHI is a leader  in cancer research and malaria prevention and treatment. It attracts bright young minds to perform research in its world class facility. Past member of RC of Eltham served on the WEHI board as Treasurer for many years.

First Rotary meeting for 2017

THURSDAY 2 /2/ 2017 – back at The Common
 
 Our first meeting in 2017 kicks off with a bang with our speaker being former Victorian Police Chief Commissioner , Kelvin “Kel” Glare AO, APM who will regail us with stories from his policing career and a bit more detail behind the contents of his recently published book “The Angry Ant’. Kel , dare I sat it, is a renowned straight shooter……. so expect the unexpected.
It promises to be a night full of interest for both members and any guests who you would like to also invite.
 
The Big Give - Fitzroy Town Hall Christmas Day

St Mary's House of Welcome holds a Christmas Day Dinner for 300 homeless and disadvantaged people each year at Fitzroy Town Hall. This has been supported by the Rotary Club of Nunawading for several years, and this year Ann & John Lynch are participating on Christmas Day. St Mary's has put out the following wish list of items required for the day. Please contact Ann if you can assist.

Ol' 55 at Bellarine Estate

When John and I stayed at Queenscliff recently, we visited Bellarine Estate. We found out about this upcoming event which is a fundraiser for the local charity TEN02 which supports local youth in Geelong.
 
Everyone has heard of OL' 55 who are celebrating their 40-year reunion tour. We heard the Screamin' Eagles at the 2016 Eltham Festival and they play The Eagles and other classic hits. We are assured of a wonderful day of music and dancing!
 
GENERAL ENTRY is $ 55.00 There is plenty of food from the food vendors and a cold drink from Bellarine Estate or Two Wives Brewery. If you prefer, you can bring your own picnic hamper (NO BYO DRINKS ALLOWED).

Sit back on the lawn and be entertained. No need to bring anything except a picnic blanket, chair to sit on and sunscreen as we have it all covered with food stalls, local produce, beer and wine.
