This weekend some of us are attending our District conference in Bendigo but remember, our Club is still meeting on Thursday for a casual night. Please make the effort to attend as this is a good opportunity to enjoy each other's company. It was great to see Melissa Anderson attend last week's meeting. As I mentioned, she was Eltham Rotary club's first female member and is always welcome as a member of our Club.
Last week was a nice change of pace with Boxing being centre stage and I think Mel and Ryan changed our perception of boxing as a sport. Also, wasn't the pie a big hit for dinner? Safe travelling to our conference attendees - I will see you on Saturday as I have a wedding on Friday. Looking forward to seeing you at the Common on Thursday.Have a good week,

District Conference @ Bendigo this week with Sports Night on Thursday evening. So, for those in town, best we enjoy fellowship at The Common…no Directors Reports, no Fine session. Just good old fashioned fellowship, lots of banter, usual time, usual cost.
The Lord's Taverners Raffle will be drawn on Thursday…fingers crossed.

The Lord's Taverners charity was founded in England in 1950, the Australian chapter began in 1982 and now has over 3,000 members. The Fundraising focus has 4 pillars;
(1) Indigenous Cricket………..support for the Imparja Cup played annually between teams representing Tennant Ck & Alice Springs,
(2) Blind Cricket……………….support for the bi-annual Carnivals rotated around Australian States,
(3) Deaf Cricket………………..support for the Deaf Cricket Ashes played every 4 years,
(4) Intellectually Impaired…….support for the development of both outdoor & indoor cricket for players with intellectual disability.
Donations are spread to provide sporting facilities, equipment & opportunity for disadvantaged & underprivileged young people. Since 1982 over $10 million has been donated in cash or kind. Of great importance to the Lord's Taverners is to ensure an event is well run, generates enjoyment & fellowship amongst all those participating.

* Ken Paynter: On Saturday Trevor Smith, Alan McCleary and Ken will be undertaking a 650km bike ride for Australian Rotary Health – sponsors would be appreciated
* Brett Linsell: Last week Rotaractors had a speaker from FIFA. Reminder re Trivia evening in May – it would be great to have at least one table from RC Eltham to challenge Rotaractors
* Ross McDonald: Rotary Friendship Exchange lunch and information session at Benalla on 6 March. Planned outgoing trips include Romania, Long Island/New York, Qld & NSW. Syrian refugees may soon be housed on a short-term basis at Judge Book – if so RC Eltham may think about how they can offer support
* Rob Kilkullen: Last night’s outing to the musical ‘Ghost’ raised $205 for Aquabox
* Jill Ramsay: Thanks to Margot Kilkullen for organising tickets for ‘Ghost’ - a great performance. Two more stage shows coming up – Sound of Music & Matilda
* Trevor Smith: Update on conference arrangements
* Ian Toohill: Easter raffle coming up at Montmorency SC as well as plans for a Timor dinner in 3rd term. A wheelchair marathon is also being organised
Last week’s speaker: Sue Gunningham donated proceeds from her book sales to members to Australian Rotary Health. The Board has approved a $500 to the CFA (one of the organisations Sue's book royalties are donated to) following her very moving presentation last week on the Black Saturday fires and their aftermath.
Speakers: This week’s presenters were Melissa Pavlovic & Ryan Breese. In 2007 Ryan’s father Rick Breese, an elite boxer trainer, opened Shadow’s Gym in Susan Street, Eltham, despite opposition from the local council. Shadows offers training not only to professional boxers but to people of all ages with a fully equipped gym, cardio boxing circuit and weight training. Melissa and Ryan gave us a fascinating insight into a world that perhaps few of us previously understood. Shadow’s Gym has supported the Eltham Festival since 2012 and plays an important role in keeping our community in shape! Ryan has won numerous boxing titles and we wish him well in continuing his winning streak!
We currently have over 50 Aquaboxes ( combination of "Family and 30's ) packed ready for immediate dispatch to Fiji should we get the call. The Aquabox team has again excelled themselves having these boxes ready. Like all our Aid efforts, we must establish if the boxes are needed, can they be delivered to where they are needed and who can manage the distribution. As soon as we get notification I'm sure Clayton will again work his magic and the boxes will be in the air ASAP.
Over the years our International contingent has made at least 3 work trips building Rota homes, including a community hall that will act as a cyclone shelter and relief centre. I'm sure our International team will keep all members up to date as to the status of their past efforts.
These highlight Eltham's "hands on" approach to disaster aid and displays the very vibrant activities and philosophies of all committees and members.
District 9790 requires all members to check and update their ClubRunner profile for inclusion in the hard copy of the 2016-17 District Directory. For any members who require assistance, I will have my laptop available at the Common from 6.15pm for the next few meetings. Your profiles can be updated 'on the spot'

yLead Australian Student Leadership Conference

It is the 23rd of January and Mel Jones, Brittany Fiddes, Claire Hone and I enter St. Hilda’s College at 9:00am (rather early for the holidays might I add) to see smiling faces and a hundred people who are completely unknown to us. None of us have any idea of what to expect from the extremely positive atmosphere created by students and mentors alike. All we have in common is a passion for change, and a desire to lead. And as you might expect, 100 leaders can make a world of difference.
The Australian Student Leadership Conference, run by the yLead team, transformed 100 young leaders from around Victoria and Tasmania into people of action, and not merely ideas. Three days saw us turn from strangers into best friends; dancing shamelessly every morning, getting groovy on a Saturday night in retro costumes and sharing our deepest secrets in an emotional two hour of self-confession.
As a group, we raised an amazing $1300 of our own money, for an organisation who provides Prep to 12 schooling for children in Africa. We danced, we laughed, we cried, and came away with so many new connections and the motivation to truly make a difference in our school community.
I think the most valuable message we took from these three days, is that only 0.06% of your DNA separates you from everybody else. So this year, we want to unite everybody through acknowledging diversity and work together toward improving the lives of those in our community.
LORD AND LADY SOMERS CAMPS
In January this year, the 2016 annual Lord and Lady Somers camps were held at a campsite in Somers, Victoria. These individual camps brought together 100 girls and boys from all over Australia, and even internationally.
Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Eltham Rotary, we were chosen to be ‘1 in 100’ from 550 applicants to these camps. Participating in Big Camp 2016 truly changed us as people. We were thrown into situations that weren’t familiar, and realised our inner potential. Our limits were pushed, and we were made to establish bonds with people that we’d never met previously.
These physical, mental, social and spiritual challenges made us stronger and more resilient individuals. Together, we acquired important skill sets that will see us through Year 12 and the years beyond. Our fresh perspective and more developed sense of self are two of these. The most significant thing that we have gained, however, is the knowledge that whatever challenges you will only make you stronger.
We highly encourage any interested senior students to apply for this incredible opportunity through the awesome Interact Club. Although you may fear the unknown and what awaits you at Lord and Lady Somers Camp, rest assured that partaking in this prestigious camp will benefit you in more ways than you can possibly imagine.

I have heard it is very good. A child's story directed at adults.
