17 August 2017
August is Rotary’s Membership Month, when we celebrate our members and the work they do with clubs around the world. Our membership team comprises Margaret Lane who is acting Director, Kaye Smith, David McFarlane and also includes Les Coath and Irene Cant in the Family of Rotary role. We have three membership goals for this year including 1) retaining existing membership and 2) inducting 5 new members and 3) developing a procedure to ensure members with personal issues are appropriately supported and to facilitate board awareness of member concerns and well being.
As you can see, with three new members inducted so far this year, and the Family of Rotary role beefed up, we are well on the way with all three of these goals. Congratulations to the team. Please let them know of anyone interested in joining the Club or a Club member needing support. Also, please speak to me or the relevant Board member if you have ideas or concerns you'd like to raise.
Talking of members who have been unwell, best wishes to Ron Manison who has had a recent stay in hospital. Get well very soon Ron - we look forward to seeing you back at Club meetings very soon.
We had a very lively meeting with the Mayor of Nillumbik Cr Peter Clarke last week. Peter outlined a very ambitious program for the Shire and of course the Club has quite an interest in many of the areas he outlined. Judging by the flow of questions we could have been there till breakfast!
Don't forget to keep 21 September free for our Footy Night and invite your partners, family and friends. We will welcome members of other local Rotary Clubs including Diamond Creek to this event which will be held at Heidelberg Golf Club and feature Greg Champion and maybe some other football 'luminaries'. Cheers, President Judy

This Week at Rotary
WheelTalk: DSR's Disability Awareness Program
This week we have a fantastic night planned with guests from Wheelchair for Kids, our annual visit from Johnny and Mamiko, and students and family members from the Japanese program at Montmorency Secondary School .
Our main guest speaker is Brendan Stroud from Disability Sport and Recreation. Brendan Stroud’s love of sport has ‘literally’ saved his life. After a near-fatal road accident at the age of 22, Brendan suffered a spinal cord injury and became a paraplegic.  A passionate advocate of disability awareness and supporter of Disability Sport and Recreation, this is Brendan’s third year presenting WheelTalk. Brendan will be presenting his story of coping after his accident including road safety, mental illnesses, and diversity of disabilities. Tough times don’t last, and it’s okay to not feel okay. Despite the trauma in his life, Brendan believes that negative experiences can be a vital turning point in the lives of others, and channels all his major life experiences into motivational speaking. Brendan hopes to educate, empower, and inspire others. Come along and be inspired.

Week that Was
  1. Judy Sharp: Looking at a possible grant from Nillumbik for shade sails at Lower Eltham Park for playground/BBQ area. Footy night now on 21 September in conjunction with RC Diamond Creek – to be held at Golf Club. Visit to old CFA shed – potentially useful for Aquabox.
  2. Jules Aussems: District Conference at Club Mulwala from 22 to 25 March 2018. Need numbers for ‘Paradise Queen’ for Friday evening dinner which  includes food and drink and cruise. Accommodation available at Country Club, caravan park etc. Please indicate preferences.
  3. Alan McCleary: Need 6 to 8 volunteers for BBQ at Wheelchair for Kids on Friday 15 September. If swapping normal BBQ rosters please do yourself and then inform Lyn Truran - don’t ask her to arrange swaps in addition to all the work she puts in organising the roster.
  4. Paul Kelly: Please notify him if not available for both days of the Festival – otherwise everyone will be rostered on both the Saturday and the Sunday. We're hoping to have great support and assistance from our partners with the Sunday BBQ.
  5. Gary Williams: The visit last Tuesday to WEHI went very well – hosted by Professor Doug Hilton who is Director of the Institute. Great work happening – particularly with leukemia, immunology, celiac disease and diabetes. Now particularly promoting innovation grants for young scientists. Marathon coming up and need sponsorship sheets and numbers participating so bibs can be ordered – much cheaper than expensive shirts. Need ideas for the lunch after the marathon which concludes with a lap around the MCG.
  6. Brett Linsell: Rotaractors will be involved with Wheelchairs for Kids as well as the Festival.
  7. Ian Toohill: Flyers on tables for Wheelchairs for Kids. Promotion of this event next week together with guests from Japanese exchange program.
  8. Dale Atkins: Short working bee at the Shed at 11am on Sunday 20 August. BYO scissors for cutting packets in two.

A horror round by the Saint has seen him fall to 5th.  $ competitors got the 9 from 9 perfect score, Goldmemba takes the $20 with the best margin on 24. Perfect score Jackpot now $20
