Keith den Hartog joined us last week as our newest member. Keith has a background as an accountant in manufacturing and also in home renovation. He has had a longtime involvement with scouts. Welcome Keith -  I wish you an enjoyable and productive membership of the Club.
Most of us pass healthAbility frequently but how many times have I heard people ask 'What do they do?' Well we learnt the answer to that this week and it turns out that they have many programs to support local people not only in the aged, youth and disability fields but also addressing more hidden areas of drug and alcohol addiction, domestic violence and homelessness. CEO Sean Spencer provided us with lots of food for thought.
This week is Club Assembly. We will briefly review the 2016-18 Strategic Plan and goals for 2017-18 but the majority of the meeting will be set aside for your ideas, questions and/or concerns. I know you will all remember the four way test and be respectful of others when raising issues. (If you want to review the four way test it is printed on the sidebar of this Bulletin.) Alan McCleary and I have submitted an application to Rotary District 9790 for a Rotary Foundation District Grant. The application seeks a matching grant to support our work with Diamond Valley Learning Centre and if successful will assist DVLC to purchase Chromebooks for the use of students in completing their Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL). Its a very worthy cause as these students would struggle to complete their education without assistance and encouragement. Keep your collective fingers crossed! Stay warm and see you on Thursday.

Thank you to the BBQ team Denese, David & Melissa we had a great day and everyone contributed well. The pressure was on a few times during the day and the contribution and commitment from everyone was fantastic all working together. We sold out of sausages and finished around 3.00pm. The final tally was $1022 profit.

President Judy Sharp will present a BRIEF review of the 2016-19 Strategic Plan (previously distributed to members), presentation of the 2017-18 budget, an overview of goals for 2017-18 and an open session for members to ask questions and/or raise issues.This is a closed meeting, therefore no guests in attendance.

Hohnes Road Playhouse
Thank you so much for your donation towards the repair of the trampoline net. The Playhouse kids will be very excited to have a functioning trampoline again – all thanks to Rotary. I'll also tell them all to get along to the miniature trains more often to buy your sausages!)
 
Bionics Institute
It was a pleasure to meet you and the members of your club. I’m pleased that the talk was well received and I was more than happy to discuss the great work that we’re doing at the Bionics Institute. Would be happy to in the future too.
Once again thanks for the kind donation to the Bionics Institute. I’d be keen to continue a relationship with your organisation and would welcome suggestions on how to foster this relationship in the future.

Diamond Valley Learning Centre
It is with great gratitude that I inform you of the purchases your generous donation has enabled:
  • $50 for a student to complete a Barrista certificate
  •  $250 for 10 students from Group C to "Beautify the Backyard" with new furniture and plants so the space is more durable and inviting for young people
  • $1,600 for 4 Chromebooks to replace 4 broken devices that have caused students much frustration and delay
  • $100 for food so students are able to eat a healthy breakfast together before starting classes

  1. Judy Sharp: Bookings closing for the dinner on Saturday 22 July for Rotary’s International President Ian Riseley.
  2. Jill Ramsay: Festival directors will give, in turn, a short update each week as well as including these in the Bulletin. Festival will now include DV Railway (and double-decker bus to and from), Royal Flying Doctor Service, MG cars, and an animal farm – all on both the Saturday and Sunday.
  3. Dale Atkins: Another donation this week of $1,000 from RC Shepparton which is very pleasing.
  4. Graham Miles: Jackpot of $240 in footy tipping this week if all winners picked.
  5. David McFarlane: 2 x entertainment books still not paid for. Please check this so that club is not $140 out of pocket.
  6. Margaret Lane: Will be away for a few weeks so please ensure that our new members are welcomed and looked after.
  7. Alan McCleary: St Vincent’s would like a BBQ built. 20 x units occupied and a further 10 x being prepared for Syrian refugees. A grant application submitted to District for $4,000 to assist programs at DVLC.  
Speaker: This week's presenter was Sean Spencer, CEO of healthAbility, who spoke about the services provided to the residents of Eltham and the surrounding districts. healthAbility is located in Main Road and is an operating division of Nillumbik Community Health Service Limited - an independent, community health organisation that has been providing support and care to people for over 40 years. Sean described how healthAbility assists those with disability, older people in the community, those with complex and chronic conditions, as well as families and youth. A cheque was presented from RC Eltham to assist with healthAbility’s emergency funds.

Behind the scenes, festival planning is in full swing. Each week, to help keep our members and partners informed, one of the festival committee directors will give a short update on their responsibilities and where planning is at in their portfolio. There will also be a short festival update in the following week's bulletin from the same Director. In this way, we hope to keep everyone 'up to speed' with festival planning between now and the festival weekend on Nov 11th and 12th.
If anyone would like to learn a little more about festival planning, you would be most welcome to attend one of our festival planning meetings held on the 2nd Monday of the month at the Eltham Hotel. Just let me know if you would like to join us.

As we get to the pointy end of the season, will Warrandyte Saint (Frank Lynch) hold his nerve and hold to top spot, or will CatzWomen (Jill Ramsay) who is purring along challenge with a wise Joker round? Round 17 saw a well-played Joker by Deadly Enrest (Paul Kelly) lift to 5 with a score of 14. A good round from Past President and 2016 Champion David McFarlane shows he hasn’t total lost the plot with his tipping with a fine score of 8 for this round. His challenge to retain his title is long gone since he is sitting in 23rd spot with 83 pts.
 
Do your research for round 18 with the Jackpot now at $260 for 9 correct tips.
