President's Message

Happy New Year to you all. I hope you had a wonderful Festive Season and have enjoyed the start to 2016.

A new year gives us all an opportunity to make a difference to some people's lives through our service with Rotary. I am very pleased that last Thursday night at Proscuitto Bros. was such a great success. Supporting our Festival sponsors is very important and you will be pleased to know that Proscuitto Bros. have paid for their sponsorship.
Apologies that, although I organised the night, I couldn't attend as our daughter had urgent surgery late on Thursday afternoon. I am pleased to report she is recovering slowly and will be fine.

On a happier note I had lovely news from Graham Miles over the break that he and Marianne had become grandparents for the first time, with their daughter Maxine giving birth to twin girls.

Can I remind you that time is running out to register for the District Conference at Bendigo. Dates are 25th to 28th Feb.

I look forward to seeing you all at The Common this Thursday night and remind you that 2 weeks later on Thursday 4th Feb is our BBQ at Trevor and Wendy Smith's to raise sponsorship for the Ride To Conference.

See you Thursday,
President David.

THIS WEEK AT ROTARY

Time to get out of the pool, back into Thursday evening @ The Common. Proscuitto Bros was great fun last Thursday evening, just the tonic. Francis Acquah, President of the Rotary Club of Greensborough is our guest speaker this week. He will talk about the new Mental Health program proposed under the banner of Australian Rotary Health. Francis is an extremely positive person and will bring that attitude to this important program. Over the last 12/18 months he has participated hard in the Community, becoming involved in programs at Diamond Valley Learning Centre with the express aim to help youth.

President David will be back in style. "Doc" Alan McCleary will chair.

Meeting will be @ The Common, 6.15pm for 6.45pm; cost $35 for two course meal, drinks @ bar prices.

District Conference - Bendigo, 25-28 February 2016

As February and our District Conference is fast approaching, it is now time for us to finalise our attendance.

Accommodation is at the Best Western Cathedral Inn where we have 20 rooms reserved plus a further 10 rooms on hold.

Please advise Ann or me whether you will be attending and the nights you require accommodation. A list will be circulated on Thursday night and at the Christmas Party.

Registration. Please go to our District Conference website  where you will find all the information needed - e.g. Keynote Speakers, social functions, sporting events, House of Friendship etc.

Remember, Rotarians must register themselves for Conference. We are not able to do this for you due to all the options offered to the delegates.

Friday Night  is traditionally our Cub night where we are booked at the National Hotel. They have given us our own function room and have promised us a great spread. It is just a short 2 block stroll from the Cathedral Inn.

Lets hope you will all be able to join us in Bendigo for this entertaining, interesting and fun weekend.

Rotary Club of Moreland - Australia Day

This year it looks like they have an exceptional speaker.

Moreland are a small Club and deserver our support.  Well worth going.

Aquabox and the Chennai Floods.

The Rotary Club of Eltham in December despatched a consignment (by air freight) of 120 Aquaboxes to provide water purification and humanitarian aid to victims of the Chennai Floods.

The consignment is being managed in partnership with the Indian Red Cross Society and the Rotary Club of Madras.

The 120 Aquaboxes provide the capacity to purify a total of 456,00 litres of water to potable standards, together with basic humanitarian aid items to facilitate recovery.

The Aquaboxes have been assembled by volunteers of the Rotary Club of Eltham and their contents and transport funded by donations from Rotary Clubs across Australia.

Journalist Eshan Arya attended the packing day and reported his observations in an article in the "Indian Weekly" dated 18th December (copy attached).

Below are some Photos of this consignement.

We are confident that, with the distribution support of the  Indian Red Cross Society and the Rotary Club of Madras, the Aquaboxes will be distributed to communities, schools and community health centres in highest need - and that we will be making a positive difference in the lives of the people of Chennai recovering from this natural disaster.

Free Firewood

To anyone with an open fire.

I  have some large branches that have dropped down the bottom of my driveway.  There are also a couple of large logs behind my Neighbours letterbox also belonging to me which would be ideal for fire wood. There is probably a sizeable boot full.

Anyone wishing to collect can help themselves anytime - 95 Weidlich Rd Eltham Nth. You will need a chain saw.

Thanks
Victoria
