President's Message
Well, we are up and rolling for 2016-17. Please excuse my ‘P’ plates! Very impressed by Jan Aitken’s summary of the breadth of initiatives across our community to engage, understand, preserve, respect and celebrate the cultures of the indigenous nations displaced by white settlement of Australia. As Ian Kiddle noted, for most of us our school history lessons started with the arrival of the First Fleet. There is a big challenge for us to close this gap in our knowledge, to understand the reality of the impacts of European settlement on those first nations and their descendants, and to work toward meaningful reconciliation. A good starting point may be a visit to the significant Nillumbik sites Ian described?
Great to see John back from China, Daryl back from South America, and Vicki back from the Ghan experience. Many epic stories to be told I’m sure! Our thoughts and good wishes are with Secretary Ann as she spends the next couple of weeks in Brisbane assisting her sister with post-operative care after brain surgery. Vicki and Nick will be handling the meeting RSVPs in Ann’s absence. Please ensure you help by responding to the meeting invitation email. Please note that the July program has been amended to enable the visit by District Governor Tony Bramley on 28th July (displacing  Christmas in July). Club Assembly has been postponed to August and we will hear from Andrew Followes (a photographer with an exceptional story), on 21st July. The new Bulletin team lead by Paul Cruse and our Program team lead by Alison are rapidly finding their form. Please support them with your ideas and patience.
Our weekly sausage sizzle is a core fundraiser and also provides prime public exposure of our club. It is critical that we operate efficiently and maintain the highest food standards. I looking forward to seeing members at the Aquabox shed 6pm this Thursday for full instruction on the set-up, operation, pack-up and maintenance of our BBQ trailer, followed by our meal at The Common.

BBQ TRAILER TRAINING
 
Essential for all members especially BBQ Team Captains
Please make every effort to be on time so that presentation can commence promptly at 6pm

Alan McCleary and the Community Service team have put together a presentation to assist all members when rostered on for the LEP BBQ

Reports from the floor:
  1. Ann Lynch: Please respond to attendance online as requested. Only 15 members did so this week. Unless an apology is registered a charge must be made for a meal. Vicki Mackrell and Nick Ikonomou will take over Ann’s role re attendance for next two weeks.
  2. Brett Linsell: Rotaract’s Changeover on Mon 18 July to welcome new President Steve; book via Paul Cruse. Fundraising Trivia Night on Saturday 19 August.
  3. Dale Atkins: Aquabox update – 33 x boxes have been sent to RC Phnom Penh as part of humanitarian aid for the village of Tnaot Chrum which was badly affected by fire and left 66 x families homeless and without adequate drinking water. Members advised that photos now at Google Photos and links will be sent to various albums including Conference, Festival, Rotary Year etc. BBQ training at Dale’s Den next Thursday 14 July at 6pm prior to dinner at The Common.
  4. Alison Cooper: Please advise Alison or Mike Englefield if members know of, or have contacts for, any potential speakers for our meetings during this Rotary year.
 
Speaker: Jeanette Aitkin – President of Nillumbik Reconciliation Group; a volunteer-based, non-profit incorporated group committed to furthering the process of reconciliation with Australia's Indigenous peoples – the first Australians. Based in the Shire of Nillumbik, which includes the Melbourne suburb of Eltham and surrounding areas, the Group aims to cultivate and promote the issues of reconciliation in our local region. Jeanette’s presentation was both informative and thought-provoking and challenges much of what has for many years been taught in ‘Australian History’ at school about early settlement of this continent.
 
Donations: Cheque for $1,800 presented to CAVE via Jeanette Aitken (President), toward Judith Ireland Awards of $500 to students in 19 x schools in our local area.

Comfy seat for Greig.
 
Great news for the purchase of a special Leckey Comfee seat from the U.K. for Greig, a young 27 year old quadriplegic with special needs, living with his family in Greensborough. Margaret Lane and David McFarlane met with the family in May, and were impressed by the genuine need and their commitment. PP David has now brokered a wonderful 3-way partnership between the family, Eltham Rotary and the Bing Boys for the purchase and import of the chair. Funds have been transferred to UK this week so fabrication can commence. We look forward to David’s report when the chair arrives here.
 
 
CAVE
 
Our donation of $1,800 to Community and Volunteers of Eltham (CAVE) last Thursday will assist several disadvantaged families with the additional costs of books and equipment as their children move from primary to secondary school. The Judith Ireland studentships provide encouragement for the students and grass roots support for the families at a time of financial stress. The Rotary Club of Eltham does make a difference!
