A big thank you to Ken Paynter and Mike Englefield for last week’s program. Australian Rotary Health is certainly pulling Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) out of the “too hard” basket by focussed PhD research in partnership with the RSL. There again, in the past 112 years, Rotary has never shirked from the difficult challenges (e.g. Polio). PDG Phil Clancy opened our eyes to the complexity of PTSD and its identification.
Personal accounts by Ian Toohill and Ian Thomas brought home the human reality of the impact of PTSD on the lives and families of those affected. Yes, Ken, Alan and Trevor will no doubt enjoy the exercise of “Ride to Conference”, but what a great way to raise awareness and funds for Australian Rotary Health and particularly PTSD research.
Let’s not forget Phil’s challenge for us to work with our RSL to run a community event to raise awareness, understanding and funding for PTSD research. On with the thinking caps!
There will be some renovations at The Common this month but I am assured by owner Kevin that they will be managed to minimise any impact on Rotary meetings. Relax and enjoy the food. Liam will be kept on his toes this week as Sally’s ‘flash mob’ descends on all the ‘a la carte’ menu options at an informal gathering.

Speaker: This week our focus was on the Australian Rotary Health program and, in particular, mental health. Our guest speaker was PDG Phil Clancy, Chair of the District 9790 Australian Rotary Health committee. Phil spoke to us of the committee's focus on a serious mental health issue in our community i.e. Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. ‘Ride to Conference’ provides wonderful support in this area and we thank our adventurous team in lycra!
There is no formal meeting this coming Thursday 2 March. However, party girl Sally has taken the initiative and called for a “Family & Friends” night at The Common, 6:15 for a 6:45pm sit down. So if you need a weekly fix and would like a nice relaxing ‘non–Rotary business” night out with friends why not join Sally. Bring your family, bring your friends, bring the kids, for this social night of Rotary fellowship. The menu is “a la carte” with bookings needing to be made directly with The Common (9439 9514).
We return to business as usual at The Common on Thursday 9 March 2017 when our guest speaker will be Miles George. His topic will be "Our Energy Future" - what's in store for the transition of Australia's energy system over the next decades.”
Miles jointly led the team which established the renewable energy business now known as Infigen Energy initially as a private equity investment vehicle over the period from 2000-2003. He subsequently jointly led the Initial Public Offer and listing of the business on the Australian Securities Exchange in 2005, and was appointed as Chief Executive in 2007 and Managing Director in 2009. Miles is in the unique position of being able to enlighten us on many of the issues surrounding the problematic energy topic.

Aquabox Australia is gearing up for a big year in 2017. While it is hoped that no natural disasters occur in our region, Aquabox is planning to be prepared for whatever occurs. The main focus will be on further pursuit of the prepositioning model, where Aquaboxes are shipped and stored in disaster prone areas. The boxes are administered by local Rotary clubs and are thus able to be distributed to those in need quickly. As the Aquaboxes to be prepositioned can be shipped via sea, transport costs are minimised. Disasters notwithstanding, it is planned to ship at least 180 Aquaboxes (162 Aquabox ‘Family’ and 18 Aquabox ‘30’) this calendar year. 120 Aquaboxes (108 ‘Family’ and 12 ‘30’) will be kept in storage at the Aquabox shed, to be shipped if required.
Another focus this year is that of enhancing the promotion of Aquabox, hopefully resulting in an increase in donations. Activities include promoting Aquabox via Facebook (www.facebook.com/AquaboxAustralia/), the production of a new Aquabox video, direct approaches to clubs and District Governors, Team Aquabox in the Melbourne Marathon events, and the use of online crowdfunding sites. With the latter, in addition to raising additional funds, it is hoped to increase awareness of Aquabox outside of Rotary. To that end, a crowdfunding campaign was launched at Chuffed.org on the 26 th of February (www.chuffed.org – search for Aquabox campaign). The aim of the campaign is to raise $16,000 over a period of 60 days.
“What stage?" I hear you say! We are referring to the uneven red brick paved area with rotten sleepers where we erect the Main Stage of the Festival each year. Greg Shaw, Team Leader, Asset Maintenance at Nillumbik Council last year recognised the area was overdue for serious maintenance and invited ideas from Rotary, as the main user.
The opportunity is now being taken to lift the stage area to .45m with a rendered wall, similar to the seating in the nearby children’s playground. The stage will be extended back and slightly widened to create a very useable, but unobtrusive concrete performance platform blending in with the form of the land and adjacent landscaping.
The new concrete base will reduce costs for our Festival infrastructure and also be ideal for impromptu ‘performance activities’ for playgroups, schools and community groups throughout the year. As our contribution to this community project we are paying $5,000 for the replacement of the power supply box and in recognition we will permanently mount the Rotary Eltham logo and R.I. wheel on the face of the stage wall.
The initial cabling ducts have been placed in advance of the stage construction to start shortly.
Secretary Ann sent out an email advising that Les found a pair of Spectacles after last week’s meeting. That’s great, but if they were reading glasses will the eMail be read by the owner?
