The Eltham Jazz Festival was a great event and sure enough Eltham Rotary was there to give a hand. Thanks to Jill and her team for ensuring the safety of pedestrians crossing Arthur Street throughout the weekend.
The a la carte menu of the Common was explored last Thursday by Sally and 18 Rotarians, partners and friends who came together for an informal social dinner. I'm told the range of dishes got the thumbs up of approval and the fellowship carried on into the night.
Long weekend ahead and while many members are heading away for a break, there's still plenty of activity locally. The Festival amongst the Falls at Kinglake sounds interesting, kicking off with the community dinner on Friday night with Rob Richards and a diverse program over the weekend (see the flyer). Holi, the Festival of Colours, will be celebrated by the Indian community with events across Melbourne. Plenty of fun, food, dancing and colour (wear washable clothes!). Great opportunity to practise your moves for our own Bollywood Ball on 6th May. Oops! nearly forgot that it's Moomba too, so whatever you choose, let's get together and have fun!
This week Miles George will give us a plain English summary of the energy industry and its problematic issues. The big picture will help us make sense of the fragmented reports we hear in the media. Maybe there's a sustainable, renewable energy source to get us through next weekend!

Miles George jointly led the team which established the renewable energy business now known as Infigen Energy initially as a private equity investment vehicle over the period from 2000-2003. He subsequently jointly led the Initial Public Offer and listing of the business on the Australian Securities Exchange in 2005, and was appointed as Chief Executive in 2007 and Managing Director in 2009. Miles is in the unique position of being able to enlighten us on many of the issues surrounding the problematic energy topic.

Just prior to New Year we applied to District for Matching Grants totalling $3000 to assist 6 students to obtain scholarships or assistance to continue their schooling. We are yet to be confirmed.
Following a request from Banksia Palliative Care we have given $500 support to an Iranian national who is terminally ill and without immediate assistance.
St Vincent’s has now housed 12 resident Syrian refugees, 8 adults and 4 children aged 2, 4, 12 and 17 years. One family is finalising private rental in the Eltham area already. Committee members have approached North Eltham Soccer Club to assist the children joining if they wish. As more residents arrive we will expand to other sporting organisations in Eltham. Catholic Care who ae co-ordinating the project expect to approve one or two families per week until the units are full.
The Sensory Garden at St Vincent’s Nursing Home is growing well and the residents are now setting up a small gardening group to pot out plants etc. We are speaking with Eltham Mens Shed to investigate a combined project to set up a Communal Garden at the facility.
The BBQ trailer signage has been completed. The BBQ Manual is now stored in the rear door of the BBQ adjacent to the Fire Extinguisher. We would encourage all BBQ personnel to read it.
A letter of endorsement was sent to the “WW1 Honour Rolls of Eltham Project” to assist them to obtain a State Government grant for their project to document and make a short film of the contribution that Eltham residents made in WW1. This has opened communication with the Eltham Historical Society who have requested assistance with their archives.
Work is well underway at Alistair Knox Park stage development and signage for the seating at Eltham Lower Park is being prepared.
On the weekend of Feb 25th and 26th, a number of people helped with pedestrian assistance in Arthur St. A BIG thank you to the following people who did at least one or two shifts over the weekend:

Cross Egypt Challenge is an international cross-country motorcycle and scooter adventure tour conducted throughout the majestic and fascinating Egypt. Participation is not only open to Rotarians or professional riders, but also open to average riders and their accompanying spouses or friends from around the globe.
This amazing Rotary project started in 2011 and for the past 6 years, Rotarians and riders from over 40 countries took part in the adventurous challenge. This year the challenge will start on October 12 and will last for 10 days and will pass by Egypt's top attractions and off the beaten track destinations.
A normal practice we are used to conduct during Cross Egypt Challenge is an annual "Sahara Rotary Meetings" where riding Rotarians along with Rotaracts from our organizing team conduct an official Rotary meeting in the Egyptian Desert – please view attached image -, a practice that we happily repeat at each new season.
Cross Egypt Challenge provides a very rewarding and challenging experience for participants from around the globe as it combines the best of adventure travels and extreme sports. The 2017 season of Cross Egypt Challenge will include one of the best routes in the history of the challenge and will pass through many of Egypt's finest spots including modern cities, coastal resorts, historical sites, Egyptian western and eastern deserts and Egypt's Nile Valley.
