6 December 2018
We had a very busy and entertaining night last Thursday with the club’s AGM followed by an activity that stretched our creativity– making a Christmas card or decoration. It was a long while since most of us had used glue sticks, glitter and our imagination, however, there were some lovely results along with some ordinary ones, mine included! Thank you to Alison who organised this crafty activity which was a fun and social thing to do. Thank you also to those who helped clean up afterwards.
We welcomed two visitors, Alan Field and Lyn Hardiman, both of whom shared some important information with us. Alan enlightened us about the recent generosity of the Judge Book Resident’s Association (JBRA) who as an act of encouragement and empowerment, handed over their Community bus along with other designated funds to the Eltham Men’s Shed. At our November RCE Board meeting, we considered a request to continue our annual $2,000 contribution towards the cost of registering and insuring the Community bus if ownership was transferred to the Men’s Shed. The Board agreed to continuing the RCE contribution in knowing that the Men’s Shed would still provide transport to the residents whenever required. PP Ken Paynter and I attended the Men’s Shed last week for the special presentation event in which Alan, as President of the JBRA, officially informed the Men’s Shed members and outlined a transfer of some assets and their designated use. This was certainly an inspirational gesture from the JBRA. Needless to say, how very grateful the Men’s Shed members are for the support they have received!
Lyn Hardiman has kindly offered to raise $1,000 for the Rotary Foundation and has devised a member’s raffle which will be drawn at our Lunch on the Deck function at the Hardiman’s on Sunday March 3rd, 2019. Members have been allocated 2 tickets to sell. Thankyou Lyn for your ongoing support of RCE which is most appreciated.
Family of Rotary update: Our thoughts and wishes are with PP Gordon who is recovering from an unfortunate fall last week and also Margaret following her recent eye surgery. And a BIG thankyou to PP Rob and Margot who dutifully did their BBQ duty on Sunday even though they are in the middle of ‘down-sizing.’
Looking forward to getting into the festive mood at Ballara on Thursday evening, cheers everyone!
President Jill

Week that Was
  1. Michael Martin: Festival wrap-up meeting next week. Did well with finances and exceeded last year’s figures. Details later.
  2. Frank Smith: Last chance to book at early bird rate for Conference. Registration $125 for new members. Need to organise the Friday evening dinner – some people staying in city.
  3. Con Proussalis: DVLC cheque of $576 from BBQ on 7 Oct well received. Board donated $500 to students’ tree surfing excursion – great success and a power point put together on the fun they had. Builds trust and resilience – all critical for mental health of young people.
  4. Gary Williams: At WEHI two weeks ago for Annual Awards night. 'Illuminate' – quarterly report – available on tables. The David McFarlane scholarship to Bridget Duckworth who presented her work here recently and commencing PhD in February. The Burnett Prize to malaria research breakthrough. Malaria contracted by 8 million people in four countries last year. Leading scientists working at WEHI on ageing of cells, cancer drugs, leukemia etc. A brilliant organisation.
  5. Alison Cooper: Next week is Xmas party – bring teddy bear and $15 ‘Sly Santa’ gift. Following week is Barefoot Bowls and BBQ. On 17 Jan a BBQ at Gary and Angela William’s house. Chef – Rob Kilkullen – will organise the spit roast. Sign up at TRY bookings by 11 January.
  6. Graeme Hardiman: Raffle for Foundation to be drawn at lunch event at the Hardiman’s at Rye on Sunday 3 March. Prizes are vouchers for $500, $300 and $200. Everyone requested to buy/sell 2 x tickets at $20 each.
