I hope you had a good Cup weekend and took some money off the Bookies. An interesting night last week with Tony combining some humour with an insight into the world of racing. Unfortunately I took his advice and had a small wager on Lizard Island in the Derby but to no avail!
November is upon us and of course that means Festival time so remember to keep the 21st and 22nd free if possible. If you can prevail upon any family and/or friends then Paul Kelly will find them a shift to assist us all. Thanks to Festival Director Rob and his team for their efforts so far – they are certainly doing a great job.
Remember that we are booked in at the House of Salad, corner of Main Rd and Beard St for dinner on Sunday 22nd at 7.30pm at a cost of $25 per head.
We have some wonderful new members in the pipeline thanks to Margaret’s efforts and will be inducting them very soon. Please make them all welcome in normal Eltham Rotary style.

November should be a more gentle pace for program……lots of local Community stuff dominated by the Festival. This week we welcome Marguerite Marshall, Eltham resident author of a collection of 400 jokes in a book styled "Best Aussie Jokes". Her presentation covers the history, psychology, health impact, national & gender differences of jokes and Australian humour.
Should be light but fun. Marguerite will bring along copies of her book to sell @ $25, $5 of which to Rotary Foundation. Some of you will recall Marguerite…she last visited the Club 5 years back, topic "Zero Carbon Australia by 2020".
Terry Oakley, representative of Diamond Valley Prostate Cancer Support Group, will also attend and give 10 mins of his best to update RC of Eltham on lots of recent Prostate news/ activity in the Community.
Some members of the Club attended the Fundraiser at the Mud Brick Palace last month.
Pres David will be assisted by Con Proussalis as Chair & Ian Toohill as the FineMaster. Midst all the activity we forgot to wish Pres David a Happy Birthday last Thursday evening. Also, had planned to organise a Cup Sweep but Con Marasco's phantom Derby absorbed the time & dollars. Hope everyone understands. We meet, as usual, at The Common, 6.15pm for 6.45pm; $35 per head two course meal, drinks @ bar prices.

The Rotary Club gets its man
PDG Alan Anderson was awarded Honorary Membership of Rotary Club of Eltham at our meeting on 29th October 2015.
Alan has taken the Club on an interesting ride since joining us in 1999.
He was elected President in 2004-2005 and in that year at the Conference in Bendigo the Club was awarded a Best Bulletin award.
Not content to rest on his Laurels Angry became increasingly active at a district level and was elected District Governor (DG) for 2010-2011.
This represented a giant leap for the Club. It was long considered that the amount of work required in having a District Governor to support was a task too big for our Club.
But the Club rose to the occasion and supported Angry in a fashion to be proud of.
In particular our conference at Wangarratta set new benchmarks.
A lot happened in our world during Angry’s year, in particular the Bushfires that engulfed Kinglake. We had a visit to our Club Meeting Rooms at Samson Hill from RI President Ray Klinginsmith.
Not much has been said of Angry's work during this time, but we have since found out that the was a DG that led from the front with many major initiatives. He is somewhat a shrinking violet in recognising his efforts as DG, but as time passed we have learned much about the reign of DG Angry.
Of particular note was his efforts in making sure that Blaze Aid survived.
Blaze Aid was doing a great job in assisting farmers after the fires, but its organisation and financing were struggling. Alan as District Governor gathered the resources of Rotary District 9790 together, in particular using the financial and organisation Skills of Rotary to make sure that Blaze Aid became the successful organisation it is today. It is fair to say that without the Drive and Skills of Angry there would be no Blaze Aid today.
And not forgetting Lady DG Dorothy. The Job of DG involves much travel and time, something in the order of 100,000 kilometers on the speedo for that year.
Dorothy was there to do her bit, I am sure the job for Angry would have been much harder without her support.
Alan resigned from the Rotary Club of Eltham following his move to Torquay, (One can't be a member of 2 clubs at the same time) but we have enjoyed his company on several visits since.
Well done Angry, congratulations on your Honorary Membership and thanks for the journey, it was a thrill.

Thank you all for your good wishes following my hip-op. I have a heavy program of physio exercises which seem to be giving small but noticeable improvements every day on my road to recovery. I was surprised that my horse finished 3rd in the phantom Derby call last Thursday night, but it was a good result, considering the attached cartoon!
