It's all systems go for Festival this coming weekend. Thanks to Jill and her band of hardworking committee members, all is in readiness for a fantastic festival that will feature an exciting mix of new attractions and ‘old’ favourites. Even the weather looks (touch wood) favourable. Thanks to all those members, partners and friends who have volunteered their time - the festival would not happen without you all. I hope you also get time to enjoy the festival and the post festival dinner at Machan.
Even the new stage in Alistair Knox Park is in readiness with our Rotary branding having been finally affixed to the front of the stage. Many thanks to Kevin Hadingham, John O’Callaghan and Graham Miles for following through on this. It will be yet another reminder to the community about Eltham Rotary and the role we play in supporting the community.
 
The next round of Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) training sessions will be held on 3 December in Euroa. The RLI course is a three part interactive training session and on completion of the three parts each Rotarian will receive a graduation certificate and lapel pin from the Rotary Leadership Institute - an international organisation. The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a series of fast-paced, interactive, one-day courses offered to refine a Rotarian's leadership skills and increase their base of knowledge in Rotary. It is geared to Rotarians who want to be more knowledgeable and effective leaders in their Clubs.  More details about the course can be found on District’s website at www.rotary9790.org.au/SitePage/rotary-leadership-institute. Please let me know if you are interested in taking part in these sessions.
 
The news on Macca is that he is now alert and communicating with family. We send  Macca, Marlene, Ash, Jess and Josh our love and best wishes.

This Week at Rotary

Members, not long now for everyone to be prepared for the Eltham Festival next week.  Jill and her team have put in so much work and everyone should congratulate them for their efforts, but now is our time to make sure their work is not in vain and that the coming weekend will be a huge success.
This week we have Part 2 of the Festival briefing sessions where there will be specific discussions for members roles on the roster.  This is your opportunity to make sure you understand the role you have been assigned and to ask all your questions or queries on any aspects of the Festival weekend.
Register now and come to this Thursday meeting and support our Festival Committee.

Outdoor Stage completed for at Alistair Knox Park!

Last year Nillumbik Council recognized that the old brick paved area in the park was overdue for serious maintenance and invited ideas from Rotary, as the main user. Consequently the ‘stage’ area was lifted to .45m with a rendered wall, extended back and slightly widened to create a very usable, but unobtrusive, concrete performance platform blending in with the form of the land and adjacent landscaping.
As a significant contribution to this community project we funded the replacement of the power supply box and in recognition were given permission to permanently mount the Rotary Eltham logo and R.I. wheel on the face of the stage wall.
Construction was completed by Council in March and this week (after allowing weeping of the tannin from the edge timber), we have affixed the Rotary Eltham signage ….. no mistaking our support for community activities in this beautiful park.
Special thanks to Graeme Miles who facilitated the cutting of the steel letters and logo, Maurie Sheehan who undertook the controlled acid rusting and lacquer finish, and John O’Callaghan who did the challenging drilling and fixing of the signage with the assistance of Alan McCleary’s percussion drill. A great community service project.

 * Alan McCleary: Thanks to Graham Miles, John O'Callaghan, Howard Turner, Lyn Truran and Ann Lynch for assisting with the very busy BBQ at Eltham East Primary School. Need extra volunteers for the  Twilight BBQ at Eltham North Primary School on Tues 12th Dec.
 
* Dale Atkins: The Rotary Club of Phnom Penh has dispatched over 90 Aquaboxes to support flood victims in the 
Banteay Meanchey Province of north-west Cambodia. Aquabox (Jill & Dale) presented to Year 10 students at St Helena Secondary College on 2 Nov.  A donation of $550 has been received from the Rotary Club of Myrtleford.

International Brief November 2017

Projects
The committee is evaluating three projects.
1/ The possibility of joining with a Rotary Club in Kolkata to facilitate the delivery of Aquabox to Indian flood victims.
Central India experiences floods on a very regular basis and 2017 was particularly bad. At present we have no way of getting boxes to this region. I will be in Kolkata in February 2018 and will meet with local Rotary Clubs.
John Roberts is exploring a possible pre-positioning of Aquaboxes in Cebu Philippines.
The South Philippines is regularly hit by typhoons and flooding and as yet we have no sure way of getting boxes to the affected regions.
2/ We will be having a briefing from Sue and Len Horwood re a crèche feeding program and an education support program they are involved in with the RC of Hout Bay, South Africa.Sue and Len live in Eltham and have for some time supported these initiatives from their own finances.
3/ I am in contact with RC Phnom Penh exploring the opportunity for a joint project - particularly in the area of children’s education.
This is only at a very early stage. I am exchanging e mails with Peter Gray, who is our Aquabox coordinator in Cambodia.

Photo attached of the beautiful painting by Award-winning artist, Jenni Mitchell in 1986.  It is entitled 'Yarra River - Griffith Park, Eltham', and purchased by us for $5,000. Size: 136mm x 181mm - valued in 2001 for $5,500.

Held on display ​for many years by Nillumbik Shire, the painting now requires minor refurbishment of the frame - it may be viewed at Nillumbik Shire by prior appointment. My wife & I are both now 90yrs and, being in aged care, are unable to keep the painting.  We don't expect offers to be anything near its true value yet, inviting offers without reserve, we don't intend to give it away.
