Hope everyone stayed high, dry and warm this week. The good news is that it is the winter solstice this week - there’s plenty of night time to party at the upcoming final Board meeting of this Rotary year, at our regular Thursday meeting or at Changeover in two weeks time. At least the days will get progressively lighter from now on - marginally so anyway.
Congratulations to PP Ken, Judy and the Paynter family on the retrospective of Gala Gowns at Melbourne Museum last Saturday. Ken gave a fascinating talk on his family company Gala Gowns  which played such a significant role in developing women’s fashion in Australia from the 1940s to the 1980s and which reflected the cultural, social and economic changes of the times. Ken talked about the vibrant rag trade in and around Flinders Lane in Melbourne, multiple trips to Europe to bring back the latest designs and fabrics to be made locally in Australia, and the risks taken in trying out bold new ideas e.g. T shirts! The fashion parade was a reflection of the changes taking place in Australia at that time.
Last week we had another fascinating glimpse into the life and talents of one of our members. Dynamo Denese wowed and inspired us all with her achievements in weight lifting and crossfit training. Congratulations Denese - I am in awe of your talents. Can we sign you up as the coach and anchor for our Tug of War team at festival?
Bast wishes to all our members, partners and their family members who are on the sick list at present. Your fellow Rotarians are there to help when we can so please let me or Family of Rotary members, Les Coath and Irene Cant, know if we can assist in any way.
Stay warm, President Judy

PR update
Website:During the year the RCE website was changed from a Wordpress version to a ClubRunner model.  Any club details updated to ClubRunner filter to the website  and require no further work.  This improvement meant that it was no longer a recurrent job to update the website weekly or monthly (Thanks Clayton for all your previous work).   Newer photos, stories and menus were added.  The addition of links to RCE Facebook,  Festival website, Festival Facebook, Aquabox website, Aquabox Facebook, Festival photos, documents required by the public, member access to ClubRunner and Rotary information are making it an information hub.A continued problem with our website on mobiles is with our web host for attention, but unfortunately he is taking his time.
Facebook RCE:A steady stream of posts are published on the page weekly, with 267 likes we are growing in popularity. Our organic reach is between 100 and 300 people.
Festival Website:Is managed by Festival team.
Facebook Festival: An intensive program of posts from 2 months out has increased our following to over 2474 likes, and a larger organic reach.  This is a cheap and effective way for us to get a variety of messages out.
Twitter Festival:Of less effectiveness than Facebook but another cheap and easy way to advertise, a campaign is run on Twitter for the Festival.
Aquabox Website: Is managed by Aquabox team.
Aquabox Facebook:Aquabox  posts run over the conference weekend managed to reach over 440 people.  It has potential to be improved.
The Bulletin:Diane Penkethman does a wonderful job getting The Bulletin out every week. Darryl Wallace contributes Member profiles.  Paul Gardner submits club history articles. Each Committee submits a report every 6 weeks.  Being linked into ClubRunner makes it easy for members to add items of interest to The Bulletin. After member requests for the ability to read The Bulletin on mobile phones we updated our version to enable this.
Other work includes Radio Interviews and working relationships with other Facebook Pages of local organisations to get further reach.

History Shorts 4 - Rotex Cinema
Before the construction of the Coles Arcade in Eltham, there was a red brick hall about where the Chemist shop now is. This hall was used for public meetings and film shows. After it was removed there was nowhere to show films. When Bruce Holland (75-76) was president, Les Clarke developed a proposal to convert a disused supermarket in Montmorency into a cinema. After some apprehension as to whether the club should be involved with a property owned by the wives of Rotarians Neville Emerson and Brian Smythe, it was agreed to adopt this project. A joint project with Eltham Apex, hence the name Rotex, was commenced and was to be funded by the formation of a cooperative company with shares paid at 10 cents in the dollar - this method having been used by Les Clarke with the foundation of Eltham College. The management committee of Rotarians and Apexians was established.
In President Bob McLellan’s time (76-77) enough funding had been obtained to carry out the physical alterations necessary. We had ‘working bees’ to change the floor to a sloping one, and I remember Doug Blaikie welding the frame for the screen and John Maltha making and hanging curtains along the side walls. The early years were successful and Rotex was showing new release films. There were some problems with the second-hand projection equipment, which turned out to be not as good as expected and had to be replaced. The cinema seated about 300 and it was considered that it would be viable if half full. After a while audience numbers were declining. Neville Emerson took over the day to day management but was unable to revive it. After the opening of the Greensborough multiplex it would seem that Rotex was no longer getting new release films.
When I was president (81-82) the management committee decided to close. It was considered that the cooperative had debts of around $60,000 and there was a concern that shareholders would be called on for the balance of 90 cents per share. To our knowledge this was the first cooperative in Victoria to close. The Rotary Board made a decision that it would not underwrite this debt. This decision led to the resignation of three past presidents, Bob McLellan, Neville Emerson and Les Clarke. This was particularly devastating as at that stage we only had eight past presidents. Fortunately, no call was made on the debt and Bob and Neville returned to the club. It is to my continuing regret that we lost Les Clarke who was a great ideas member. This is my recollection of this project and might not agree with others involved. While I was a member of the Board (in various positions) for the entire period covered, I do not think that I was aware of all the decisions that were made. The building is now occupied by the Montmorency Newsagency.
