President's Message

It was a nice change of pace to attend the home of Trevor and Wendy Smith last week and enjoy a casual BBQ to help fund raising for Rotary health. Thank you Trevor and Wendy for your generosity in offering your home and thanks also to Ken Paynter for his assistance in ensuring a successful night. Good luck to Trevor, Ken and Doc. McCleary for a safe and successful ride to conference.

At the meeting at my home last week I heard about some issues with the weight of our BBQ trailer. A small committee of Howard Turner, John O' Callaghan,  Ron Manison,  Graham Miles and myself decided that a new axle with a brake was required. Howard and John have undertaken to conduct these modifications this week and all should be ready for this week's BBQ. Thanks to these members for a great team effort. Back to The Common this week and a reminder of the District Conference in Bendigo on the weekend of February 26- 28. See you all Thursday,

We return to The Common on Thursday having enjoyed a terrific BBQ social last week @ the home of Trevor & Wendy Smith. This week marks 7 years since Black Saturday. Sue Gunningham lost her partner in the bush fires and was motivated to record her story "All the Days After". Her book was published last November, a memoir of the trauma of the tragic day and the following 12 months. She will talk about some of the issues she faced, the process to recovery, regaining strength, then a way forward. She has lots of photos to share on screen. The book will be available for sale, we will encourage Sue to donate part of any proceeds to the positive mental health programs of Australian Rotary Health.

President David will, hopefully, have a Valentines' message/rose for the girls. Graeme Hardiman will be in the chair whilst Max Lee will ensure there are lots of beans in the coffers!!  Should be a moving evening.
Usual cost @ $35 for two course meal, drinks at bar prices.

Australia Rotary Health BBQ
A huge Thank You to all those members and partners for the amazing salads and desserts they provided for last week's BBQ.
Also to the Eltham Rural Group for providing the crockery, cutlery and glassware free of charge, Stephens Meats for providing the rump steaks at a reduced cost and Shillinglaw Cottage restaurant for the $50 voucher raffle prize.
What an enjoyable night of fellowship while fundraising at the same time.

Update on Alan Field OAM
Our dear Friend of Rotary, Alan Field OAM has been battling some serious health issues with several hospital admissions over the past few months.

Frank Lynch has been keeping in close contact with Alan and we have sent an email to him on behalf of club members.
Frank advises the following:
'As you would expect from Alan, he still has his sense of humour. He said:  Rumours of his demise are exaggerated.
He appreciates the interest and concern from his friends in Rotary.
Alan said it can be very tiring talking and repeating the same story on the phone, best contact could be via email.'
For more information, please contact Frank Lynch.
We wish Alan well and hope for improvement in his condition.

International Directors Report
Our next upcoming project is to raise funds for Wheelchairs for Kids. These invaluable wheelchairs built to World Health Organisation (WHO) specifications are produced in Perth with the help of 170 retiree volunteers. 32,000 of these wheelchairs had been built by November 2015.
The presentation they gave to our club early in 2015 was memorable and really highlighted the passion and commitment of those involved.

Ian Toohill has informed me that discussion is underway with Montmorency Secondary College (MSC), Interact and the SRC as to the feasibility of running a wheelchair marathon to raise funds for this worthwhile cause and to send wheelchairs to needy kids in East Timor. Frank Lynch is also keen to promote Wheelchairs for Kids at a local level..
As our dates and plans crystalize I will be asking that our club (RCE) gets behind this excellent Rotary project to help both Ian and Frank and make this fundraising event a huge success.
