Footy finals time! Not much to be said for a couple of games last weekend, especially the one involving the CATS! All the best though to the remaining teams on their finals run. Looking forward to a good night this week with our Footy night, should be a terrific mix of colour, information and fun.
Rhiannon Tracey, an Eltham local, greatly inspired us last week with her personal journey and account of her own spinal injury and her motivation and commitment ever since. Having set up The Next Step (TNS) not-for-profit organisation, Rhiannon is dedicating her life to helping others, like herself. The Next Step promotional pamphlet states: Sometimes the smallest step in the right direction ends up being the biggest step of your life. Tip-toe if you must, but make sure you take the next step! What a profound statement! It’s certainly being lived and demonstrated to the max. by Rhiannon and the work that she and her team are doing. Rhiannon is an amazing advocate for those with not only spinal cord injuries, but also those with other neurological, musculoskeletal and/or cardio/respiratory conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s, MS etc. We at RCE look forward to staying in touch with Rhiannon and learning more about the ground-breaking and life re-building work that she and her team are doing at TNS.
Recently PP Gordon Birch offered to make available some of his beautifully crafted pens with proceeds being donated to the DG’s wife’s project – Buy a Bale. So far, Gordon has raised $200 and he is busily making a few more pens for members who would still like to purchase a pen or two. Thank you Gordon!
A pleasant Sunday afternoon has just been enjoyed at Shaws Road Winery in Arthur’s Creek. This was a combined social event for the Rotary Clubs of Nunawading and Eltham. Thank you to both John Lynch for organising this and to those Elthamites who attended this enjoyable joint club event.
Family of Rotary: Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Ron Manison who undergoes hip replacement surgery this week and also to Penny Proussalis, currently recovering from knee surgery.

One of our speakers at Footy Night is Eliza Broadbent - a teacher at Balwyn High School, an AFL Timekeeper and Female Umpire Liaison Officer at the Victorian Football League. She has been a strong advocate for females in sport, particularly AFL umpiring, and has come up against many obstacles throughout her career. She aims to continue championing the achievements of women both academically and in their personal endeavours.
