Vocational service is a core avenue of service of Rotary. It’s great to learn how diverse occupations make a difference in our community and in our personal lives. Audiology does not have a high profile yet, as Jasna Bruce explained, incremental hearing loss is pervasive in our population. Often dismissed, it can have a significant impact on our quality of life and relationships. Thanks to Audiologists, help is at hand with great micro technology for effective and unobtrusive treatments.
Great timing by our program gurus with last week’s ABC Australian Story featuring Susan Alberti. What a lead up for the footy night on 22nd Sept! Interest is now booming to the extent that we have had to move the night to the Heidelberg Golf Club to cater for the numbers. Make sure that you and your invited friends book and pay asap to secure places.
Ian Thomas alerted me this week to our connection with the earthquake affected community in Italy. Ian led a Group Study Exchange to District 2090 in 1999 which included some of the communities we are unfortunately seeing in the current news. Our thoughts and prayers are with our fellow Rotarians in Italy.

Susan Marie "Sue" Alberti AC is an Australian businesswoman, philanthropist and Vice President of the Western Bulldogs Football Club. Susan is a relentless worker in the search for a cure for Type 1 diabetes, and advocating for improved health care services for disadvantaged people. She is a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) received in January 2016 for her work as a role model and mentor to young women, and her service to sport especially her beloved Western Bulldogs Football Club.

Speaker: Jasna Bruce has been working as an Audiologist for over 20 years and is also a registered psychologist. She is passionate about hearing care and supporting clients to maximise quality of life by improving hearing. Jasna specialises in hearing assessment, psychosocial support of hearing impaired whatever stage of life clients are in, and, when indicated, hearing aids fitted with current digital hearing aids and/or alternative listening devices.

Muskaan school was established in 1997 to provide accessible and meaningful education for street kids ‘untouchables’ from the urban slums of Bhopal. While I was working in Bhopal, Marion
volunteered at Muskaan and witnessed their innovative and engaging teaching practices with a curriculum based on the realities of life in the slums. There is a track record of success and several
Muskaan students have now reached college level. The school has had a gypsy life using public parks, disused government buildings and rented offices. Land was purchased on the outskirts of
Bhopal and construction of a dedicated campus is underway, with structural completion mid 2017. The Muskaan school is registered as a Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) project between the Rotary Club of Eltham, the Rotary Club of Bhopal Midtown, and Muskaan Support Australia Inc. (a charity established by Marion and I). RAWCS registration has enabled tax
deductibility of donations. Eltham Rotary has particularly supported the project with sausage sizzles and strong attendance at the various Bollywood functions arranged by Muskaan Support Australia. Another Bollywood Ball is set for Sat 6 th May 2017 – so now is the time to mark your diaries.
