While we are a strong group doing good work within our local community, we often overlook the collective work of Rotary on the global stage. Immunisation programs funded by the Rotary Foundation’s Polio Plus program, and matched by the Gates Foundation in recent years, have eradicated 2 of the 3 strains of the polio virus and brought down the number of polio cases reported worldwide from 300,000 to just under 30 per annum. As Dr Bruce Anderson said last week, “It is not IF the polio virus can be eradicated but WHEN it will be eradicated” and our contribution will certainly help.
 
We pride ourselves on being a club which enjoys fun and fellowship in service. This week’s Mad Hat Cup Night will bring those elements together for Rotarians, partners and friends in fundraising for Australian Rotary Health research into mental illness.
 
On Cup Day next Tuesday, we join with the Rotary Clubs of Kinglake Ranges, Mitcham and Nunawading for a great Cup Day Carnival just up the road in beautiful Kinglake – heaps of fun while raising funds for our Aquabox project. Let’s wave the Eltham colours, share the fun and fellowship, and show them our appreciation for supporting Aquabox. Contact Clayton Hedger if you haven’t booked already.
 
Selecting a Cup winner? For me it’s a case of pin the tail on the donkey. It doesn’t really matter where the tail lands, but the pin certainly seems to give them a hurry on! Happy Spring Carnival.

This Week at Rotary

Spring Carnival comes to Eltham
 
 
 
Spring Carnival night is a fundraising night so come prepared, bring some guests and be ready for some fun.
 
Our speaker Nazarin Marchionda will help us once a year punters with giving us some tips with "Betting Demystified".  Naz is an avid follower of racehorses and has studied what horses win their form and how to pick a winner.  Come along and hear how you can improve your chances of picking a winner in the Cup or Oaks Day.
 
The night is also a special fundraising night for Rotary Health and so the cost of this meeting will be $40 which includes entry to our Spring Carnival Hat Competition with prizes for the female and male best hat on the night.  The proceeds raised will go to the Lift the Lid Rotary Health project for research on mental illness.
 
Bring your race hats and money for sweeps and a raffle ready to have fun.

Reports from the floor:
  1. Kevin Hadingham: Board meeting last night. Strategic goals adopted. Directors to submit articles to Bulletin. See update on projects and contact if you can help. Reduced subs for younger members i.e. ‘under 35 years’ for first two years. $2,000 for Operation New Start students at Eltham High and Montmorency S/C
  2. Jill Ramsay: Update on Festival - Lee Conkie and two other chainsaw artists to participate! Meetings on 3/11 and 10/11 to be dedicated to Festival with briefings from key teams, setting-up, safety training etc.
  3. Graham Miles: Completed 21 kms in 1 hr 53 mins. Good fun and great lunch afterwards. Thanks to all sponsors and participants. Raised $1,300 and additional $1,200 outside RC Eltham.
  4. Max Lee: Family day for Melbourne Cup Carnival on Cup Day at RC Kinglake Ranges. Please sign up as three other Rotary Clubs (Kinglake, Mitcham, Nunawading), raising money for Aquabox. Prizes needed for raffles.
  5. Dale Atkins: Corporate sponsors for Marathon raised $3,000. 21 x members/family/friends took part and all survived.
  6. Mike Englefield: 27 Oct Melbourne Cup theme – prizes for fun hats as well as sweeps and raffles. Will be $40 a head with $5 going to ‘Lift the Lid’ campaign.  10 Nov AGM and 17 Nov ‘Mr & Mrs Snag’ night.
  7. Jules Aussems: 39 x places sold and 1 x available for New Year’s Eve party.
  8. Alan McCleary: Planting at St Vincent’s on 22/10. On 17/10 meeting of team leaders from local groups re support of Syrian refugees. Protests are from outside of Eltham. Volunteers needed for 1-2 hours week to assist settling in process.
  9. Brett Linsell: Rotaractors update re Diamond Creek Festival. This week attended RC Greensborough Central. Need to organise St Helena S/C mock interviews for Year 10s re handouts, dates, procedures.
  10. Judy Sharp: Please collect and distribute Festival posters.
  11. Ken Paynter: Major sponsors for Festival in place but need local business sponsors at $100. Requests that each RC Eltham member achieves at least one local sponsorship.
  12. Jim Phillips: BBQ raised $700. New seats at LEP a great success.
 
Speaker: Dr Bruce Anderson (RC Strathmore) was the speaker – very fittingly on World Polio Day. Bruce has a special interest in vaccines to overcome diseases including polio and spoke about the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. This was formed in 1988 and is a public-private partnership that includes Rotary, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Rotary’s focus is advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment and awareness building. Our thanks to Dr Anderson for an inspiring presentation. See www.endpolio.org
