When is the next joint meeting with the Rotaractors? We can see that there is a bright future for Rotary when you speak with them and share their ideas. The energy and ideas of Rotaractors, guided by the skills and experience of Rotarians makes a powerful combination. Thank you to President Steven and the Rotaractors for sharing the meeting last week and particularly for arranging Gillian Essex as our guest speaker.

Gillian’s generous and open heart toward the Syrian newcomers to our community was infectious. We can see how she was able to mobilise so many friends and create the Welcome to Eltham group. How logical that the unwavering positive strategy of the Welcome to Eltham movement overcame the negativity and misinformation of the protesters? With the offers by Rotarians of various forms of assistance and even possible employment for the refugees, I’m sure we will be building very tangible relationships with the Welcome to Eltham Group and our new Syrian neighbours in the coming year.

Yes, the new Rotary year is just 3 weeks away and I’ll be released on bail from presidential duties! Incoming President Judy returns from the South of France next week, so don’t be surprised if she wants to change our closing anthem to La Marseillaise!

Cheers, Kevin

  8. Michael Englefield reports that next weeks speaker will be from Odyssey House.
Our guest speaker was Gillian Essex president of the welcome to Eltham group.  She outlined how a small group of passionate caring people welcomed the Syrian and Iraqi refuges to St Vincent’s catholic care.  The group grew quickly with great support from the local area and around Victoria. They adopted the local Copper butterfly emblem and a strategy to thwart outside prejudices’ on the refugee issues.  Volunteers have been teaching English, listening and playing music to bush walking with the new arrivals.  A key issue is securing work for the refuges to help them start a new life in Australia and obtaining a driver’s license to assist with transportation etc.  RC Eltham provided a cheque to Gillian to assist with driver training lessons and Mike Ramsay offered to assist where possible with some employment opportunities at LOVIT tools.
