After our recent run of evenings with a focus on local community service, last week’s International Night presentation by Sonny Gomez highlighted the life-changing outcomes achieved in developing countries through the Interplast program. With the motto “Repairing bodies, rebuilding lives”, teams of Australian plastic surgeons travel to developing countries to perform remedial surgery and train local doctors.
It was a privilege to welcome our new members Chris and Andrew! They have already demonstrated they are very ready, willing and able Rotarians by energetically volunteering at sausage sizzles and the festival! Chris was also a volunteer on the RAWCS trip to East Timor.
We have had a good working relationship with Shourouk since making “The Common” our home some 18 months ago. We hope to have confirmation soon that the new owners are also happy to continue the arrangements….We don’t want to be known as the Eltham Gypsy Rotary Club moving camp regularly!
Of course a bit of gypsy music is great fun and our Christmas Party this week is shaping-up as a great night of festivity to celebrate Christmas and to wrap up 2016. Don’t forget you need to bring a teddy bear to get in! Also, make sure you buy lots of tickets for Irene’s $1,000 Christmas hamper raffle in support of the Rotary Foundation. This will kick-start our special effort in fundraising for the Foundation in its 2017centenary year.
Yes, we’re at the end of the calendar year and halfway through the Rotary Year. We’ve have had many achievements this year, but there’s lots more fun and service ahead of us in 2017 as we live out the R.I. theme: “Rotary Serving Humanity”.

When John and I stayed at Queenscliff recently, we visited Bellarine Estate. We found out about this upcoming event which is a fundraiser for the local charity TEN02 which supports local youth in Geelong.
Everyone has heard of OL' 55 who are celebrating their 40-year reunion tour. We heard the Screamin' Eagles at the 2016 Eltham Festival and they play The Eagles and other classic hits. We are assured of a wonderful day of music and dancing!
GENERAL ENTRY is $ 55.00 There is plenty of food from the food vendors and a cold drink from Bellarine Estate or Two Wives Brewery. If you prefer, you can bring your own picnic hamper (NO BYO DRINKS ALLOWED).
Sit back on the lawn and be entertained. No need to bring anything except a picnic blanket, chair to sit on and sunscreen as we have it all covered with food stalls, local produce, beer and wine.

Speaker: Sonny Gomez - District 9790 Rotary Interplast Chair. The International Service committee has committed to support Interplast this Rotary year. Sonny spoke to us about the amazing teams of volunteer plastic and reconstructive surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and allied health professionals who provide life-changing surgery and medical training in 17 countries across the Asia Pacific region. A cheque for $1,000 was presented from RC Eltham to support this essential humanitarian work.
St Mary's House of Welcome holds a Christmas Day Dinner for 300 homeless and disadvantaged people each year at Fitzroy Town Hall. This has been supported by the Rotary Club of Nunawading for several years, and this year Ann & John Lynch are participating on Christmas Day. St Mary's has put out the following wish list of items required for the day. Please contact Ann if you can assist.
