Last week we were treated to a fascinating insight into the science of oceanography - the study of oceans and the actions of tides. Local resident Dr Graeme Hubbard runs his own consultancy business GEMM and has been involved in developing Environmental Impact Studies for many projects across the world including on Australia's North West shelf, in Dubai and off the coast of Queensland. He has advised on managing oil spills as well on search and rescue operations including the search for MH370. Graeme showed us amazing developments in the measuring of ocean temperatures and predicting tidal flows which are now showing us concrete evidence of ocean warming. As he puts it 'the measurements are fact, not belief'. Graeme also demonstrated the importance of understanding currents and tides before embarking on projects such as port developments and ocean dredging: the before and after pictures of Portsea beach are sad reflections on our failure to listen to scientific reason. Thank you Graeme for a fascinating, if somewhat scary, presentation. And thank you to Chairperson Howard Turner for suggesting Graeme as a guest speaker.
This week will also be a big week as we host  local resident and CEO of the North East Link Authority, Duncan Elliot, who will update us on this huge project and hear your views. Bring your partners and friends but please RSVP to Denese by COB on Tuesday to enable her to get numbers to Third Chapter on time on Wednesday morning. Denese has been doing a great job juggling the numbers so please make it easier for her.
Thanks to those who have volunteered for extra sausage sizzle duty in the next few months. We have been asked to do several special events including the reopening of the Eltham Convention and Reception Centre (AKA Mud Brick Palace), on 7 October and supporting the Interact kids in their Wheelathon. As well as raising extra funds, these events give us an opportunity to be visible in the community and promote the great work we do.Have a great week.

This Week at Rotary

This week club members have an opportunity that not many other community groups have been given, so I encourage all members to come along, participate, and listen to our special guest speaker Duncan Elliott from the North East Link Authority. 
The North East Link is a new freeway to complete the missing link in Melbourne's road network and will finally connect Melbourne's freeway network between the M80 Ring Road at Greensborough and the Eastern Freeway or EastLink.
Right now, North East Link Authority is preparing a business case and undertaking community engagement as it examines the opportunities and challenges of the project. Duncan will be asking members their views, taking questions, and consulting on, the four options proposed. This week is a great opportunity for members to have a say on the options proposed.  Members, start preparing your questions in relation to the North East Link and register for the meeting.

7 September - Jim O’Connor from the Eltham Historical Society is coming along to discuss the Eltham’s mud brick heritage and the architects who promote this style of building.
14 September – Neil Barras with his colleagues Neil Bland and Barry Gunning will be presenting on a series of 5 workshops on retirement that they have developed and are looking to launch in 2018.  Retirement is another stage of life and our speakers will present on their program and talk on the issues encountered by those approaching retirement or already retired. There is an opportunity to ask questions in order to prepare for this phase and what it will mean to each of us.
21 September – Eltham’s Annual AFL Celebration night with Greg Champion (singer, songwriter and entertainer), as well as a special footy panel. Diamond Creek and other local Rotary clubs have also been invited to join us.  More details coming in the next couple of weeks.   1. Judy Sharp: We now have a sub-committee looking to find a new venue for our meetings – a high level of interest and suggestions.
  2. Alan McCleary: Still problems getting into the shed – thanks Dale for video! One team captain has retired so need someone with a towbar to step up. Volunteers needed for BBQs for following dates:
  • Friday 15 Sept. at Montmorency S/C – Wheelchairs for Kids
  • Wed 25 Oct – Eltham East PS – see Graham Miles
  • Sat 7 Oct 11am – 2pm at Mud Palace – Council Open Day
  1. Dale Atkins: Thanks to the crew who came to working bee at the Shed on Sunday. Also had problems getting in and out of shed but managed to get some help. A great Aquabox donation this week of $2,750 from RC Ararat.
  2. Paul Kelly: BBQ last week with mates helping took $1,181. Couldn’t get trailer into shed – mechanism broken.
  3. Ian Toohill: Need 6 x volunteers to help with Wheelchairs for Kids event on 15 Sept. One member of RC Eltham has generously offered to double whatever is made on the night.
  4. John O’Callaghan: Meeting coming up next week – visit by Duncan Elliot from the NE Link Authority and an opportunity for your input on this issue.
  5. David Laws: Would appreciate an assistant for co-ordinating the area of operations at the Festival – supplies, tents, loos, generators, etc.
  6. Ross McDonald: Grant application underway for a 20 minute film ‘Eltham Remembers’ to honour service personnel. Lots of support from Mayor, Vicki Ward MP as well as members of RC Eltham.
  7. Jules Aussems: Accommodation still available for Conference in March 2018 at Yarrawonga. Please complete sheets being sent round to finalise numbers for Friday evening cruise and the Saturday dinner. Also New Year’s Eve tickets at $190 need to be paid for in next few weeks.

The Community Committee has had a busy first few months of the 2017-18 year. It is involved in the following matters:
* organising talks from Odyssey House and Bionic Inc for Thursday night meetings.
* updating the BBQ manual which is now on Club Runner and has been sent to each Team Leader.
* assisting Diamond Valley Learning Centre with the BBQ on 13-08-17 with half a dozen students working. Raised over $800 for the school to assist sending students to Wliderness Camp.
* providing a BBQ for North East Link Information evening  and raising $2020 for the Club.
* supporting Men’s Shed in Government Grant application.They will also have use of the BBQ trailer for Children’s Week on 25-10 17.
* applying for matching grant of $4000 from Rotary District 9790 to purchase Chrome Books for students at DVLC.
* applying for a Federal Government Grant of $20,000 to install shade sails in the children’s play area on behalf of Council.  Council will consider installing shade sails over the new seating. Logos to be installed on seating soon.
* sending to Catholic Care concept plans for a BBQ shelter to be installed at St Vincent’s apartments for use of refugees.
* Alistair Knox stage upgrade has been completed. Waiting for the timber to stop bleeding sap to install Rotary logo.
* Historical Society has published an article in their newsletter thanking us for assisting in archiving all their photographs and files. They will give a talk later in the year.
* discussing with St Kilda Mums' organisation how we might assist them locally. St Kilda Mums supplies goods and clothing to new mothers in need across Victoria.
*Hohnes Road Play Group has thanked us for supplying funds to repair their trampoline.
* commencing dialogue with Glen Ferraroto of Ironside Recruiting and RSL on how we can work with the RSL to raise funds for research into Post Traumatic Stress Disorder affecting retired and serving service personnel.
* Discussion with Eltham Food Share has led to discussion with Healthability to see how we can assist in support for food for needy people in Eltham.
* commencing an investigation of the upgrade of the Avenue of Honour trees in Main Road Eltham.

The Final Home/Away round saw CatzWomen (Jill Ramsay) get 5 correct tips; her lead cut marginally from  5 points to 4 from the chasing pack . Only a disaster through the finals would prevent Jill from picking up the champion title and top cash price. No one managed the perfect 9 thus the weekly prize for 100% tipping in the first finals round will be $60.
