President's Message
 
Thanks to the members who have answered the questionnaire prepared by Kevin Hadingham; the responses have helped us formulate a strategy for the future of our club.
 
The Club Assembly to discuss our 3 year Strategic Plan, changes to our By Laws, and the announcement of our Board for 2016-17, will now be held on April 28. Club Assembly is a member only night - no guests.
This week will be a speaker free night so we can have a friendly chat and if committees want to break away and have a meeting they can.
 
Last week's speaker certainly gave us a great insight into the horror of war but Terry's passion and knowledge was amazing. Thanks to Ian Toohill for arranging this.
A reminder of our commitment on Anzac Day; a 5.00 a.m. start and if you want to join us for breakfast it is a prepaid event at approx.7.00 a.m. at the Common. Please pay on Thursday night.

Speaker Free evening this week as Club Assembly has been postponed by one week. Opportunity for fellowship and the Sub Committees to meet after 8pm, following up the April monthly Board. Looking ahead, worthwhile reminding Committees the Youth Services evening will be on Thursday 5th May and the launch by Jill Ramsay of the 2016 Eltham Festival will be on Thursday 26th May.
 
President David should be upbeat this week after his Lions jagged one, the Program guy is pretty happy too!! Darryl Wallace will make his maiden voyage in the chair
 
The venue is The Common; $35 for two course meal. Drinks at bar prices. Should be a chance to relax a bit after a month of pretty full on evenings

Anzac Day Update

The Rotary Club of Eltham has managed and directed the dawn service at the Cenotaph for the past 2 years in partnership with Eltham/ Monty RSL.
Last years estimated attendance was approx. 8,000 people.
 
This year the service will focus on the Vietnam conflict as it is the 50th anniversary of the battle of Long Tan.
 
The volunteer roster has been emailed to those members who have offered assistance.
Please register with Lyn Truran (top of Panther Place) at 0445 so that you are at your allocated position by 0500
Any roster changes, please advise Rob Kilcullen kilcullenrob@hotmail.com
 
You will be required to wear Rotary lanyard and hi vis vest if manning barriers or closed off streets. Wear your yellow shirt (usually over the top of warm clothing)

 Final numbers will be given to Shourouk on Thurs evening for breakfast at the Common. Please ensure you have booked with Ann Lynch and paid ($25 per person)

Wheelchair for Kids Fundraiser

  • A major Fundraiser  coordinated by the Eltham Interact Club at MSC will be held on Friday 27 May at Willandra Park Greensborough to raise funds for Wheel Chairs For Kids. The goal is to raise $500 for 20 chairs to be sent to Timor Leste. Many members will recall the presentation by this awesome group last year. They have sent over 200 rugged purpose-built wheelchairs to areas of need in the developing world.
  • A demonstration wheelchair basketball match is planned for 11th May at Montmorency Secondary College in the basketball stadium to raise community and media awareness of the event
  • It is a combined community event between Rotary Club of Eltham International and Youth Service committees / Montmorency Secondary College/ Interact Club and Diamond Valley Rotaract Club , with assistance from Disabled Sports Victoria and Eltham Wildcats
  • Eltham Rotarians are asked to volunteer to assist in providing support on the day and through community and personal sponsorship of the students participating in the wheelchair relay on 27 May.

2. Rob- good response from members in support of Anzac Day. Volunteers to assemble at 0500.  Breakfast at the Common at 0730.
3. David Laws - Aquabox packing this Sunday at the shed. All welcome.
4. Max Lee - Max, Peter Roden and Ian Thomas are meeting the NZ Emergency Response Kit people.  Margaret Lane gave a presentation to the Eltham Rural Group.

Interestingly the names on two war memorials (Eltham and Kangaroo Ground) are full of mistakes.
60,000 Australians died in the war, but another 60,000 returned soldiers died within 10 years of coming home as a direct result of the war.
British gas masks to protect against mustard gas used asbestos in their filter! War is a terrible thing.

East Coast Golf Classic for Umoja Orphanage Kenya

EAST COAST GOLF CLASSIC FOR UMOJA ORPHANAGE KENYA
The Rotary Club of Shepparton Central in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Bundaberg Sunrise are organising a Golf Tournament to be played over 18 days on Golf Courses from Shepparton to Bundaberg and leaving Shepparton on 4th July, 2016 to raise funds for the Umoja Orphanage.
Umoja Orphanage is currently under construction and is a project of the Rotary Club of Bundaberg Sunrise. The Founder and driving force behind the project is Cathy Booth, a member of the Rotary E Club NextGen, based in Qld. The completion of the first children’s home is imminent and the freehold site on which the project is built is 15 acres at Ukunda, on the East Coast of Kenya. Umoja is a RAWCS Project
The trip is designed as a tag-a-long caravan/camping trip and not just for golfers, there is plenty of time for sightseeing and social activities along the way and opportunity to catch up with fellow Rotarians at the various locations at which we will stop to play golf. Local Rotary Clubs at most of the venues along the way are committed to helping with the event and to raise money for Umoja.
