President's Message
Last week was a very busy week with a Board meeting Wednesday night then on Thursday morning several Board members attended the school assembly at Montmorency Secondary College. I was fortunate enough to address the assembly about the long and successful relationship which the Rotary Club of Eltham has shared with the MSC. Ian Toohill is to be applauded for his wonderful work with the Interact kids at the school.
 
Thursday night saw us split our activities with most of the club visiting the Donations in Kind store in Footscray which I believe was a most successful and interesting evening. We gave them a donation to assist with their valuable work. Some of us attended a thank you function at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for medical research in Parkville.There was a presentation of their latest projects and we handed over the final donation of a 3 year commitment to purchase two Microscopes. I hope that we continue to have an involvement with WEHI as it is the most wonderful organisation - doing incredible research and achieving great results. Thanks to Roger Male for his introduction of our club to WEHI.
 
Our normal Club meeting is happening this week so if you're not heading away for Easter come along as usual and hear David Laws "Rotarian behind the Badge" presentation. For those members going away. have a safe and enjoyable trip.To everyone have a good Easter.

Reports from the floor:
1.  David McFarlane:  Thanked David L for a brilliant ‘Behind the Badge’. Update on Mike W who is in hospital. Thanked Margaret L for her tremendous work with membership – we now have over 50 members of R.C. Eltham. Function at Greensborough Central on 12 April - $50 head. Speaker – Jim’s Mowing. Please volunteer for Anzac Day service being organised by Rob K and Ken P. Sign up for footy tipping which will raise funds for Foundation.
2. Ian Toohill: Easter Raffle at Montmorency S.C. raised $300. Coming events include Wheelchairs for Kids at Willinda Park, Greensborough and ‘Shave for Cure’.
3. Max Lee: Next week we celebrate our Aquabox sponsors including Andrew Temby – an aerobatics display pilot.
4. Brett Linsell: Reported on D.V. Relay for Life on 19 March which has raised approximately $90,000 for the Cancer Council. Thanks in particular to Rotaractors Erin Rose & Zac England who are part of the committee.
5. Sally Squires: Tickets available at $20 for Rotaractors’ movie night ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2’ on Wednesday 30 March. All money raised will go to the Cancer Council.
6. Kevin Hadingham:  Please complete surveys to assist with developing a strategic plan. Many good ideas so far – only takes 5 or 10 minutes to do.
7. Ann Lynch:  List circulating re Anzac Day service. A booking has been made at The Common for breakfast afterwards at $25 a head.
 
Speaker: Tonight’s speaker was David Laws with ‘Behind the Badge’. David, his wife Samantha, and his two sons share an adventurous spirit and have moved from the U.K. to the U.S.A. to Australia for reasons of lifestyle and employment – David is now working as an engineer for Kalmar.  As always, BTB provides a fascinating insight into the diverse backgrounds of our members.

Vocational night on St. Patrick's Day proved to be a great success. Those who visited the Rotary Donations In Kind (DIK) Store and Walter Eliza Hall Medical Research Institute realised, yet again, how important it is to visit organisations we support from time to time.
 
This week we return to The Common for the Easter Eve meeting. David Laws will present his Rotarian Behind the Badge (RBTB) talk which is sure to be entertaining. David has packed lots into his life so far in many places and contributed plenty to RC Eltham over nearly 3 years.
 
President David will bounce the ball for start of the AFL season. Most of us will have something to talk about again!! Chair Person is Paul Kelly and Ross McDonald has the chance to incentivise the Finemaster session with the reward of an Easter egg?
 
We know its Easter Eve but lets try to keep the numbers up for Shourouk. Usual time of 6.15pm for 6.45pm; cost @ $35 for two course meal with drinks at bar prices.

The Rotaract Club of Diamond Valley are holding a Fundraiser movie night as follows:
 
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2
After spending most of their time focusing on their teenage daughter, who just graduated from high school and will be heading off to college soon, Toula and Ian are facing marital problems while also having to deal with yet another Greek wedding - this time, even bigger and fatter. While Toula and Ian try to settle their marital problems, a secret from her family's past is revealed

Tickets $20 each. President David has reserved ten tickets for club members, please advise Ann Lynch if you would like any tickets.

Wheelchair for Kids Fundraiser 

 
A major Fundraiser  coordinated by the Eltham Interact Club at MSC will be held on Friday 27 May, to raise funds for Wheel Chairs For Kids. The goal is to raise $5000 for 20 chairs to be sent to Timor Leste.
Many members will recall the presentation by this awesome group last year. They have sent over 200 rugged purpose built wheelchairs to areas of need in the developing world.
A demonstration wheelchair basketball match is planned the week before in the MSC basketball stadium to raise community and media awareness of the event ( date TBA)
 
It is a combined community event between Eltham Rotary International and Youth committees/MSC/ Interact Club, with assistance from Disabled Sports Victoria and Eltham Wildcats.
 
Eltham Rotarians are asked to volunteer to assist in providing support on the day and through community and personal sponsorship of the students participating in the wheelchair relay on 27 May.
I encourage the club to get behind this worthwhile project both with sponsorship and attendance at the events.I would also like to acknowledge Ian Toohill's hard work in coordinating the Montmorency School, the Monty Interact Club and the Eltham Wildcats basketball team along with Disabled Sports Victoria in bringing this fundraiser together.
 
 
 
Lower Eltham Park BBQ Report March 20th

Well what a great day we had at the BBQ,  the team of Jill, Lyn, Michael and myself performed superbly
A great team effort with a grand profit of $807.70
 
We arrived at the LEP to find a tree had fallen over our space, so we set up on Mr. Whippy’s space !!! expecting drama but all was ok and cosy.
Michael needs additional cooking lessons to limit the amount of charcoal on snags !!!
Lyn needs to brush up on ‘counting money’ , we all have that problem because of ‘lack of’  !!
Jill and me, we are near perfect so not much to add !!
