13 February 2020
Myself and a number of club members, along with Rotarians from Bernie’s club Preston, joined family and friends to farewell Bernie. It was a large gathering, and family and friends spoke fondly of their memories of Bernie. He was well respected and much loved. From humble beginnings Bernie and his wife Gerry created a thriving business and raised a family. Along the way he became a Rotarian and staunch advocate for the Bone Marrow Institute and the Children First Foundation. The success of these organisations is in no small part due to Bernie. His passions were his family, his friends (and he had many), the Western Bulldogs, Rotary, his Charolais cows and Dalwhinnie Scotch. Bernie Lamers (May 1933 to Jan 2020) – fondly remembered and sadly missed, by all who knew him. Bernie was still organising additions to the Children First home whilst he was in intensive care. Rotary has lost one of its stalwarts. RIP Bernie.
Our two speakers gave us an update on what the shire of Nillumbik was doing to reduce its carbon footprint, as well as giving members an insight into how they could do their part. These measures included getting solar (on average only 12-13% of households in our shire had solar), change over from gas to electricity and invest in heat pump hot water systems. If 65,000 residents (Nillumbik population) could be encouraged to adopt these changes, we would make a significant impact towards zero emissions. As the cost of solar and batteries keeps falling, many businesses are also making the change to use renewable energy. Electric cars are getting cheaper and travelling further before requiring recharging. Also, more charging stations are coming on line every week. CEN is invested in educating business, councils and the public in reducing our CO2 emissions and helping the environment. Natalie and Ian’s talk was very informative and gave everyone present pause to consider what we all can do to help our planet.
A reminder to all Board Members that the next Board meeting is Wednesday, 12 Feb 2020 at the Eltham Hotel, at 7pm.

Then following this event we have the dinner at Machan Restaurant on 27 February.
