Greetings everyone - I’m back in town after a busy but enjoyable week in Hong Kong. My thanks to Kevin Hadingham for holding the fort in my absence.
Thanks must go to Alison, John, Brett and Nick for organising last week’s Commonwealth Games night. Teams ‘competed’ in a number of activities including bowls, golf, quoits, table tennis and bocce. There was lots of fun and laughter and it was a great relaxed way of enjoying each other's company and getting to know each other better. Winner on the night was a very surprised Dave Laws whose prowess at table tennis earned him the title of Club Champion (and several bottles of wine). Thanks to Heidelberg Golf Club for accommodating us so well including providing delicious finger food at all the event locations. There was general agreement that we should have another sports night next year.
The Combined 2017-18 and 2018-19 Boards will meet this Wednesday for the first time. We will review progress this year and start to frame some goals for the forthcoming year so that there is a smooth transition to the new Board come July. Thanks to the 27 people who took the time to complete our survey which has now closed. The Board will consider your comments at its meeting this week and report back the results to you all at Club Assembly on 5 April. Your ideas and suggestions will inform the 2018-19 Board in setting their goals for the forthcoming year. If you missed the survey deadline but still have some ideas you’d like us to consider, please email me directly with your comments.
Cheers, President Judy

Reconnecting with our youth - particularly the homeless
This weeks speaker is Roslyn Sandwell, who is healthAbility’s Youth Reconnect Officer. Roslyn has over twenty years’ experience in education, counselling, youth work, case management and group facilitation. She will be presenting an overview of healthAbilities services to youth in the area and in particular the Reconnect Program.
Reconnect supports young people whose housing is unstable and who are at risk of becoming homeless or are already homeless. healthAbility's youth team works with at-risk youth to reconnect, maintain and develop healthy connections with family, friends, school and community. This is achieved through collaboration and partnership in coordinating early intervention and prevention programs and initiatives.Come along and hear how a local community service can change the lives of young people in our local area.
Well, another Eltham Rotary Sports Night over and a new Champion has emerged. David Laws blitzed the field with his agility, gracefulness and luck and won the overall sportsperson for the night and also received a priceless trophy to hold onto for the year. I actually think he was more interested in the bottle of wine he won!! Congratulations to the winning team comprising Gary Williams, David Laws, Lynn Truran, Darryl Wallace, Alan McCleary, and Ian Thomas.
I would also like to give a HUGE thank you to John O'Callaghan and Irene Cant who help me with the Program and put up with my last minute requests. I really appreciate your being part of the Program Committee.
I also want to thank Brett Linsell, Nick Ikonomou, Jim Phillips, Margaret Lane, Jill Ramsay and President Judy for the planning and assistance on the night as Marshalls. Thanks to Ken for bringing the Table Tennis table, and other members who brought equipment for the night. The weather was perfect with enjoyable food and the activities not too taxing. I hope that everyone had a great night and had lots of fun as much as I did. It was also a good introduction to our prospective new member Dennis as to how competitive Eltham Rotarians are. Thanks to everyone who participated and we will plan for another Sports Night in February next year.
