Thank you to everyone who supported the Mad Hats and Cup Night theme last week and contributed to Australian Rotary Health funding of research into mental illness. It was a fun night and I wonder if we have any new millionaires in the club following Nazarin’s tips for the big race?
Thank you to Alison for organising the night and to Andrew for stepping in to host Nazarin and follow-up the arrangements while Alison was in hospital. We all wish Alison a strong and comfortable recovery.
All the hype surrounding Halloween, Diwali and Melbourne Cup has of course just been leading-up to the major Spring event of Melbourne - the Eltham Rotary Festival!
Planning for the Festival kicked off in February and Jill and the committee members have worked tirelessly over the past 9 months to bring everything together for another fantastic community event and fundraiser. Now it’s in the hands of all of us to deliver!
Please be sure to attend the briefing sessions over the next two weeks to understand the festival program, layout and procedures. and your specific role on the weekend.
Our meeting this week is aimed at giving members, along with any partners helping at the Festival, an overview of what's been planned and the organisational requirements for festival weekend. Our festival committee members will outline key information aimed at tuning everyone in and better preparing all of us for the busy festival weekend.
A number of our members and partners are experienced Festival participants whilst some of our newer members and partners have no Festival experiences to draw on. The Festival overview this week should put us all 'on the same page.' We are all 'Festival Ambassadors' ahead of and during festival weekend so the more informed we are, then the more we can inform others about the 2016 Rotary Eltham Festival.

Kevin Hadingham: The Common is running a fundraiser with a craft activity table for mask-making set up in the restaurant. $10 to make a mask and have a coffee or $15 to make a mask and have a glass of wine. Thanks to Jill and Judy for promoting RC Eltham in blizzard conditions in the town square!
Jill Ramsay: See clipboard with menu if planning to come to post-Festival dinner. Meetings on 3/11 and 10/11 to be dedicated to Festival with briefings from key teams, setting-up, safety training etc. Thanks to those who helped out in town square. Activities there again on Saturday 29th to support premature babies and the opportunity to promote RC Eltham.
Peter Roden: 5 x seats still available on bus to travel to Cup Day at RC Kinglake Ranges. So far 28 x Rotarians or family members attending from our club.
Dale Atkins: 120 Aquaboxes have been dispatched to Fiji prior to the cyclone season and will be distributed as required by RC Suva. Can now restock - Lawrence Webb is keen to get his staff involved in packing and is uploading crowd funding on his website. Donations are down this year
Alan McCleary – representative from Catholic Care will attend on 17 Nov to discuss what is required of volunteers in assisting Syrian refugees. Thanks to Howard for sorting out problems with BBQ. Have enough volunteers for planting at St V’s.
Judy Sharp: Please collect and distribute remaining 50 x Festival posters.
Paul Kelly: Festival roster will be available on 28 Oct and any changes must be advised by him by email by Wed 2 Nov.
John Skinner: Wheelchairs for Kids in early 2017 will once again need our support. Last year Montmorency S/C raised in excess of $10,000. RC Sunbury involved in Solomon Islands RAWCS projects related to water systems, sanitation and drainage.
Speaker: Our thanks to the Coopers for arranging our Cup Carnival speaker, Nazarin Marchionda, who entertained us with stories about the racing industry and in particular some of the history surrounding the international interest in the Melbourne Cup. Naz is an avid horse racing fan and shared some tips with us for picking winners for the Cup or on Oaks Day. We’ll wait and see what our success rate is.
Trivia night raised $3,050 for DVLC. This has been donated to them.

Rotaract had a joint meeting on 17 Oct with Greensborough Central at Watermarc.

Stand at Diamond Creek Rotary Festival on cultural diversity and sharing. They shared the site with Greensborough Central. Raised some money.
Interact Club of Montmorency Secondary School : Ian Toohill
The new Interact executive has been elected for 2017.
The final two events for 2016 are the Halloween out of uniform fundraiser (Doctors without Borders) at MSC on Friday 28 Oct, and the stall at Eltham Festival on Sunday 12 Nov, selling cold drinks and liquorice.

Youth Exchange : Jill Ramsay
Gracie's (preferred name) paperwork now in Japan with Mamiko who will action the Guarantee form which is a commitment from Hondo Rotary to oversee the exchange and host family.
They're also doing the selection process for the next student to come from Japan. This will be decided in the next 2 weeks; then the host family for Gracie will be confirmed so communication between Gracie and the Japanese student can then begin, ahead of Gracie's departure for Japan later in November.

Amanda Green & Sam Wilson from Rotaract Club of DV has been chosen to go to RYLA. Linda G has been informed. Both will attend Rotary in November to thank the club for the opportunity. Nick has done a great job.
Operation Newstart:
The RCE donated $2,000 to allow 2 students from Eltham High and 2 from Montmorency Sec College to attend. This program catches students at educational risk, they run an 8 week program to reengage them, bolster their self-esteem, educate them on the risks of drug and alcohol, show them other options and ways to further their education.
Thankfully the weather was much better last Saturday when once again, some Eltham Rotarians were in Eltham Town Square from 11am-2pm supporting the Eltham Traders 'Dudley Dash' festival fundraiser. Funds raised from raffle ticket sales will support 'ReadySteadyGrow,' a charitable group that supports premature babies and their parents in the formative years.
It was also a great opportunity to promote festival weekend so we handed out a quantity of our 'hot off the press' new look festival programs. It was great to hear many of the locals saying, "Yes, we'll be at the Festival this year!"
Special thanks to Paul Kelly, Paul Cruse and Vicki Mackrell for joining me in promoting the Festival as well as the local traders' Shop Local Loyalty Program and Dudley Dash fundraiser.
If you are available, please support The Common on 19th November at a fundraiser for Victorians less fortunate than ourselves. Cost is $50. $30 of this will be made a charitable donation on your behalf to the SALT Foundation.
