Isn’t it wonderful to see the sun shining and to feel warm again. I write this after a stint on the Lift The Lid on Mental Illness stall at Bunnings. Bunnings was booming; everyone seemed intent on gardening as potting mixes, seedlings and weed killers were ‘walking’ out the door! There was moderate interest in our stand - the kids loved our balloons anyway - and we did manage to get some donations to Australian Rotary Health. Thanks to Con, Irene, Ann, Trevor, Jules and John for volunteering on the stand. Thanks also to Rob, Margot, Vicki and Andrew who cooked sausages for the opening of the Eltham Community Reception Centre on Saturday 7 October.
Next week, Ken and I will be accepting the Jaga Jaga Community Sports Award for our contribution to fostering local sports through Have a Go Oval at Festival. It is great to receive recognition of what we do and to know that it is 'Making a Difference’ (the Rotary theme for 2017-18). Thanks to all who have contributed to the success of Have A Go Oval, with a special mention to Sally who started it off and was in charge of the oval for the first few years.
We will be moving to our new ‘home’, Heidelberg Golf Club, on Thursday 26 October. HGC has agreed to do an introductory night for us with a tour of facilities, some barefoot bowls and a presentation on the Club, past and present.
We have all been shocked and concerned at the news that David McFarlane has had a heart attack whilst on holidays in Maui and has since had triple bypass surgery. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to Macca and the whole McFarlane clan.

My apologies to members for the non attendance of last week's speakers on advanced care planning. It was a confusion on the dates from both sides, but Kaye stepped in and, even though not prepared to lead the night on advanced care planning, did an amazing job and was very professional handling the number of questions and discussion. Ann will be adding the links to the relevant documents for preparing an advanced care plan to complete or have the discussion with family members.
Anyway, this week's speaker is Brendan Delaney from Operation Newstart.This organisation provides outdoor, recreational, vocational and therapeutic experiences for young people at significant educational risk. This will be an interesting night as it is one of the projects supported by the club.

Team Aquabox will represent the Rotary Club of Eltham in the Melbourne Marathon on Sunday 15th October, 2017. Very special day which has required much training and mental conditioning!! There are 6 events from 7.00 am - all starting in Batman Avenue adjacent to the Tennis Centre and finishing with one lap around the inside of the G. The Aquabox team members and their events are as follows; (1) Graeme Miles is again leading the charge, tackling the 21.6 km half Marathon from 8.00am.
(2) Jill Ramsay & Victoria Clague, the 10km walk from 10.00am, (3) Dale Atkins, Con Proussalis & Darryl Wallace the 5.7km run at 11.30am, and (4) Alan McCleary with Mary, Darius, Fleckney and Siobhan plus Joseph Lual, John Roberts and President Judy (if her very sore feet permit) the 3km walk from 11.45am.
Team Aquabox enjoys Corporate sponsorship in excess of $3,000 by Temby Auto Service, Hallmarc, Lovitt Technologies, Dillon Partners, AIO Engineering, Bendigo Bank, St Helena Mediplex and Sharp Signs. In addition, team members have arranged their own sponsorship but would welcome heaps more for a great cause. Each team member will wear a sponsors bib, generously provided by Sharp Signs, (Andrew Sheppard).

New York style bites, sliders, steaks, tapas, cheese plus terrific range of beers, wine & cider; very relaxed, plenty of room to move inside & out; area set aside for up to 36/40 (7 tables). Suggest google <melbourne marathon> for course layout, best vantage points. Weather forecast for Sunday looks really good so do support the team if you can and share the stories at the after party from 12.30pm.

Judy Sharp: Advised that past president Macca (David McFarlane), has had a heart attack in Hawaii. The whole club wishes Macca and family well and our thoughts and prayers are with them. We hope to see him well again and back at Rotary very soon. Judy also advised that the 26/10 is confirmed as our first meeting date at our new venue - the Heidelberg Golf Club.

Dale Atkins: There are 9 runners in this year’s Melbourne marathon event and sponsorship is progressing well with approximately $3000 or more pledged. The running bibs have been completed with all sponsors’ names included. The 'after the run' event is on again at the Tipler at the top end of Wellington Street. 7 tables have been booked for a relaxed afternoon. Dale’s team on the LEP- BBQ this week raised $896 on Sunday. Registrations for the Eltham festival is running at 150 stalls this year with a new Animal Farm enclosure and the Royal Flying Doctors also featuring this year. The Aquabox team is still working on getting 60 family boxes to Nepal on standby for pending disasters in the region.
Jill Ramsay: There will be two briefing nights - 2/11 and 9/11 to ensure all club members working at the festival will be aware of their tasks and be ready for the fun of the festival - our biggest Rotary event of the year.
