The Big Group Hug began from one random act of kindness in 2014 when the now Director noticed a pram on a nature strip and asked the owner if she could take it for a family in need. Four years later, The Big Group Hug is a growing enterprise with volunteers who provide a much-needed service for vulnerable and disadvantaged children and their families in the northern suburbs. Warehouse Manager, Judy Gayfer, gave an inspiring account of the scope of their work and the ever-evolving networking that occurs with other agencies and organisations. A shout out to the support Margot Kilcullen provides to The Big Group Hug too. Margot collects a vast array of donated toiletry items and packages them into toiletry bags. Margot could do with some help with sewing some simple draw-string toiletry bags so get in touch with Margot if you can assist and don’t forget to save any spare toiletry items.
This week, the District 9790 Governor Malcom Kerr and his wife Jill, along with Assistant Governor Greg Paull, will visit us. Malcolm will have an informal meeting with the RCE board members from 6.00-6.30pm and we’re hoping that several of the Rotaract board members will also be able to attend. I know that Malcolm is looking forward to meeting our members and learning more about our very active and engaged Rotary Club.
The Feb 15-17th 2019 District Conference will be held in Melbourne and will be a much larger conference than previously. It will be a Victorian multi-district conference and a wonderful opportunity for Rotarians and partners from all over Victoria to come together. Please see the Conference flyer in this Bulletin as conference bookings are now open.
RCE JOB VACANCY: 2019 Conference Organiser I would really appreciate someone volunteering to take this job on please. Previously done by Jules, then Trevor before that, the job of the conference organiser has been to keep members informed, encourage attendance, organise a Friday night club dinner and accommodation. However, as the conference will be in Melbourne, accommodation can be removed from the job list for next year. Rotarians are free to make their own arrangements which may include travelling back and forth or staying in the city somewhere. Please let me know asap if you would like to be our 2019 Conference Organiser.
And … special thanks to Mary McCleary for stepping in at extremely short notice and helping on the BBQ last Sunday. And a reminder to Rotarians, if you can’t do a rostered task such as BBQ, door duty, fine master etc., it is your responsibility to find a replacement please.
President Jill
Lower Eltham Park BBQ 9:30 am - 2:30 pm
You are responsible for finding a replacement if you are unable to do your rostered duty and to notify Lyn Truran ljtruran@bigpond.com
Rotary District 9790 -District Governor Malcolm Kerr's club visit
This week we welcome our new District Governor - Malcolm Kerr. With the Rotary International Theme of Be the Inspiration,Malcolm Kerr, Rotary Club of Cobram, has been quoted as saying "It is the year when we strive to “Be the Inspiration”. But who will you inspire and who will your club inspire?". Come along and hear the District Governor's plans for the year ahead.
The next Members Social night is on Friday the 17th of August at House of Salad, located on the corner of Beard St and Main Road, Eltham. Dinner will start at 7pm and it is suggested we have a set price for Pizza and Pasta meal. Members with food allergies will be able to order off the menu separately. The restaurant has a full bar, and allows BYO wine.
If any Rotarians are interested in providing us with a full day, part day or two days, please let us know. There are nearly 300 Year 9s, so a bigger group than the Year 10s! The program will run the same as it did for our Year 10 s.
15 minute interviews
A row of chairs outside the rooms, numbered to match the interview stations, where the students wait
Interviewers have an evaluation sheet ready to go for each student and go out to greet them at the appointment time
Students will have applied for one of 12 jobs (same as our year 10 jobs – list to be provided)
Each interviewer will interview between 9 - 12 students each in one day (depending on your available times), for various job roles;
Interviewers will ask the students four questions;
Tell us about yourself
What do you see as your best employability skills (ie; Why should we hire you)?
Describe a time when you have had to handle a difficult situation, customer or work colleague in the past.
What are three positives a past employer or a teacher would say about you?
Times ; Between 8.30 am and 2.40 pm - whenever suits the interviewer
Interviewers will provide them with some feedback after the final question and give them some insight into how they could improve their responses, body language and preparation for future interviews. (Students will have had some preparation for these interviews in class time).
An evaluation sheet is attached, which has the key things we give a mark out of 5 for and a comment section for feedback to the student.
You will interview on your own unfortunately as it is very difficult to get staff involved due to their teaching loads
Thank you all for your consideration of volunteering to be an interviewer in our Year 9 Mock Interview program in October. I appreciate it is very close to your massive commitment to the Festival in November. Felicia Pellegrino will be managing this event and will be in touch with you once you have indicted to her your availability. Contact Debra Dunn B: 9438 8687 or main office 9438 8500
With lots of current discussions around "false truths", "mispeaking" and "double negatives" the following job reference by our good friend A.Non is sure to raise a smile:
"Trevor Adams, my assistant programmer, can always be found hard at work in his cubicle. Trevor works independently, without wasting company time talking to colleagues. Trevor never thinks twice about assisting fellow employees, and he always finishes given assignments on time. Often he takes extended measures to complete his work, sometimes skipping coffee breaks. Trevor is a dedicated individual who has absolutely no vanity in spite of his high accomplishments and profound knowledge in his field.. I firmly believe that Trevor can be classed as a high-calibre employee, the type that cannot be dispensed with. Consequently, I truly recommend that Trevor be promoted to executive management, and a proposal will be executed as soon as possible.
Addendum...... The idiot was standing over my shoulder while I wrote this report. Kindly re-read only the odd numbered lines.
No, he was not seeking membership of RCE!
