30 January 2020
What a great way to kick off 2020. Kelvin Spiller did a great job as Fine Master and well and truly got us all. Well done Kelvin. Ken Paynter’s rendition of 'I Made a Hundred in the Backyard at Mum's' was superb and appreciated by all present. Then the Balladeer, Don McQueen, came on and had us spellbound as he recited Banjo Patterson and Henry Lawson, to name but a couple. What a fantastic night to start the year off. My heartfelt thanks to all concerned, especially to Jules and Alison.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Jim Phillips, who is in hospital having treatment and doing it tough. My thanks to Gary Williams, who brightened up Jim's day with some balloons and well wishes from the club.
This week we are back to our normal club meeting, with new member Jacqui Donald giving us the heads up on Tourette’s Syndrome. Hope you can make it to what will be an interesting talk. Also, I will be inducting former Rotarian Alan Field into the RC of Eltham. Good to have Alan joining our club. He brings a wealth of knowledge in Community Service.
Kerry and I attended the Local Food Connect (Farmers Market) in Eltham on Sunday as a part of our fundraising effort. Being a long weekend, crowd numbers were down, but we still managed to raise a respectable $889.70 shaking the buckets. Plus a $122.00 late donation from the Gozleme trader - many thanks. A grand total of $1011.70.

Bushfire Appeal

The Eltham Farmers’ Market has teamed up with the Rotary Club of Eltham to provide assistance to farmers in our region who have been impacted by bushfire. Our aim is to provide help, in a very targeted and timely way, to farmers with immediate needs. For example food for their stock, veterinary support, fencing or other necessities.

Over the next few weeks Rotarians will be at the market shaking a Bushfire Relief tin. Please contribute if you can.
Update 26/1/2020: Our first donation, to purchase hay and stock feed pellets for the Corryong bush fire area, is on its way. Delivered by the Rotary Club of Kinglake Ranges. Thank you for your support.

Joke of the Week

A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named 'Amal.' The other goes to a family in Spain, they name him 'Juan'. Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his mum. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wished she also had a picture of Amal. Her husband responds, ''But they are twins. If you've seen Juan, you've seen Amal.''
