30 April 2020
Last Thursday we had our first Video Club Meeting using Microsoft Teams. It was a great success with 40+ members joining us on line. Many thanks to Sally, Denese, Dale, Alison and Brett for making this possible. We had a couple of minor glitches but overall I rated it a success.
My thanks to all the club Directors for updating the club on their current situation. We may be in isolation but we are not in hibernation, and the work of Rotary will continue.
Next meeting we will hear from our own Kevin Hadingham, as he presents his Rotarian Behind The Badge story. It has been quite a while since Kevin presented his story and many members will not have heard of Kevin’s exploits. So put it into your calendar now.
From our next meeting I intend to do the Invocation and the Loyal Toast in our virtual environment, so make sure you have a glass of something handy.
Last Saturday we paid our respects to our veterans and to all who have served or are serving in the armed forces. Like many of our fellow Australians, Kerry and I, along with many of our fellow Rotarians (Messenger was very busy), walked to the bottom of our drive with our torches as a mark of respect to all who served and to the many who paid the ultimate sacrifice. All along our street you could see the lights and then the sound of the last post. It was a special moment. Thanks to Alan Field for the photos of our wreaths at the Eltham Cenotaph, laid by Glen Ferrarotto from Monty/Eltham RSL (many thanks to Lorraine Englefield and Ann Lynch).
Until next meeting stay safe and stay in touch.
President John

Protocols for RCE 'Teams' Club Meetings
To ensure that Thursday's 'Teams' meeting runs smoothly, all members are requested to abide by the following protocols prior to and during the meeting:
1.  Members are to log in close to 7pm, preferably at 6:55pm.
2.  ALL members logging in are to ensure that they are logged in by 7pm and have their microphone on MUTE.
3.  If members want to ask a question, they should type in the Chat box and indicate this way that they have a question.  John or Denese can read and advise that the member can speak.
4.  The only reason to unmute the microphone is to ask a question when President John indicates that a particular member can ask the question that was identified via the Chat box.
5.  Questions are to be respectful and framed with the 4 Way Test in mind.
6.  If other members do not agree or have alternate views, then they will have to indicate this via the Chat box and wait to be identified, and then can address their concerns or questions.
7.  Members can leave the meeting at any time by logging out.
Etiquette during the meeting:
RCE Messenger Chat Group
If any member would like to join the RCE Messenger chat group, please let Sally or I know. Note that you will require a Facebook account to use Messenger. Creating a Facebook account is easy. Just go to and enter your details in the 'Create an account' section and click 'Sign Up'.
ANZAC Day Commemoration
The wreath below, generously made by Lorraine Englefield, was laid at the Eltham Cenotaph at dawn on ANZAC Day by Glen Ferrarotto from the Montmorency Eltham RSL on behalf of the Rotary Club of Eltham. Glen also laid a wreath from Ann Lynch on behalf of New Zealand service personnel.
Many Eltham Rotarians and partners marked ANZAC Day by standing at the end of their driveways (or on their balconies) at 5:55 am, including Gary and Angela Williams and Ross McDonald, below.
RCE Board for 2020/21
Introduction of The Rotary Club of Eltham 2020-2021 Board.

It is a proud moment to present to the Club my Board for the year 2020-2021.
The year 2020/21 finds me taking over the reins of a thriving Club. The standard set comes largely as a result of President John’s amazing year. It is reassuring that John in his capacity as immediate Past President will be there to help me maintain the great standard that he has put in place.
Due to the pandemic we have had to make many changes in the way we operate. Meetings will continue via Teams and Zoom for the foreseeable future. Thanks to Sally and all who have contributed to enable this to happen. But as soon as we can operate face to face, socialize and enjoy dinner together, we will.
I am very fortunate that most of the current board have agreed to continue in my year, their know how, knowledge and experience will be invaluable in the tough times ahead.
Unfortunately, Alison Cooper will stand down due to work demands and health issues. Fortunately, Alison has agreed to stay involved in supporting Gary. We are all very grateful for Alison’s years of brilliant contribution, and I am personally grateful to Alison for her ongoing input in the coming year.
Over the last two years, Michael Martin has had to juggle the books, he has been meticulous and thorough in managing the Clubs funds. Our very strong financial position comes largely as a result of Michael’s skills, the Club is in a strong financial position to tackle my year ahead. Note we will have very little income over the next twelve months. Thank you, Michael, for your contribution.
I welcome Gary Williams and Lou Bolzonello to the Board. They have had Board experience in the past and will further strengthen the management of the Club.

The 20/21 Board is:

President                                Frank Lynch
President Elect                       Sally Squires
Secretary                                Denese Billings
Treasurer                                Lou Bolzonello
Immediate Past President      John Skinner

In addition to the board I would like to develop a formal supporting structure. We are a large Club and Board members work hard for the community, a lot of members support and contribute in many other roles on committees etc. I would like to see these roles officially recognised.
We need a deputy member to step in as an understudy in the Board’s roles. For example, an understudy to back up Jules with Membership and another to support Paul in Community Service. Deputies would be invited to board meetings and could participate in discussions where appropriate.
Please get involved and talk to any board member or myself on 0412416546. If there are any questions or further information is required. My email is
The next 12 months will be a challenge, and we will do things differently through necessity. In spite of any restrictions we are a vibrant Club full of achievers, and we will continue to support the Community and have a lot of fun making it happen.
Stay safe Be resilient and thrive.

Kind Regards,
Frank Lynch
President Elect
