What a great night we had last Thursday for our annual footy night. Some 93 people, all dolled up in club colours (and some in dubious outfits Ron Manison!), enjoyed a two course meal, raucous interaction with others on their tables over the impossible quiz, and of course the entertainment provided by Greg ‘Champs’ Champion. The evening, including the raffles and auctions raised over $2000 for Foundation. Congratulations to the (noisy) winning table which included the Wetzlers and Williams.
The Club thanks most sincerely Greg Champion who generously donated his services for the evening and who was as entertaining as ever. Thanks too to the generosity of The Good Guys Preston who donated the auction items and to Nillumbik Cellars and Tip Top Meats who donated raffle prizes. Congratulations and thanks to Program Director Alison Cooper who led the organising team including John O’Callaghan and Irene Cant, to MC and auctioneer for the evening David McFarlane and also to Ian Kiddle who sourced the auction items.
Whilst on footy, well done to PE Jill Ramsay - Footy Tip Champion 2017! Expect lots of fines for your prowess.
Also on sport …. we received some good news this week. A few weeks ago we entered the Jaga Jaga Community Sports Awards in the category of 'Contribution to sport by school or community groups to a particular sporting event, facility, or for continuous support over a minimum of two years’ . We used our work at Eltham Festival and Have A Go Oval in particular to highlight our claim for the prize. We were very pleased to have been selected as winners of an award in this category this year. The award ceremony will be held on 12 October. I don’t think the prize is high stakes but its nice to receive public recognition for the work that we do.
You should have all received an email from me outlining two options for a meeting venue and asking for your preference. Thank you to the many people who have replied. For those who have yet to respond, you have until COB Wednesday to express an opinion. I will email everyone on Thursday to let you know the result. Cheers,

Preparation for the Fire Season
 
This week we have a change of pace with a presentation from Michael Vermeulen from the Eltham CFA.  Michael will talk about preparation for the fire season and to get members thinking on preparing for the predicated hot summer and expected fire season.
Who is affected: People living in country Victoria and the outer metropolitan suburbs of Melbourne. The Fire Danger Period takes effect by municipality.
When is it declared: CFA declares the Fire Danger Period for each municipality (shire or council) at different times in the lead up to the fire season. It depends on the amount of rain, grassland curing rate and other local conditions.
The Fire Danger Period may be declared as early as October in some municipalities, and typically remains in place until the fire danger lessens, which could be as late as May. Members are urged to come along this week even if you do not have a rural property to hear about the upcoming fire season.  Book in now!

Annual Football Night in Review
 
What a fantastic weekend of football after a wonderful Footy Night held last Thursday.  Many thanks to John O'Callaghan for securing Greg Champion as our entertainment and who wowed the audience with his sharp wit, football knowledge and musical prowess.  It was a great fundraising night for Foundation and that is all due to our sponsors - Good Guys Preston, Nillumbik Cellars and Tip Top Butchery. 
Nights like this are hard to organise and take a lot of time to put together as I am sure Gary Williams can tell you after doing it for 7 years.  Thanks to John O'Callaghan and Irene Cant for all your organisation and efforts every week - you are a fantastic team.
I would also like to highlight and express my extreme thanks to Ian Kiddle and David McFarlane.  Firstly to David thank you for being the MC and doing a fantastic night keeping us entertained.   I am in awe of both Ian and David for their ability to make my job easier and I am so appreciative of them both going above and beyond in encouraging their contacts (Andrew Firn and Marco Paoli from the Good Guys), for the amazing prizes for the raffle and auction where we raised money for Foundation.  Without members making the effort to source these donations our fundraising nights/special events would not be successful.
Anyway - I am excited to say that Melbourne storms into the NRL Grand Final next Sunday and for those AFL fans, Richmond flies the Victorian flag in the AFL against Adelaide. 
 
 
Theatre Night 23 November

It has been suggested we have a social night at the Eltham Little Theatre, Research on Thursday 23 November instead of the normal club meeting.  Member’s interest in booking for this night is needed by 5 October to secure the number of tables at this production.
                 
  
Turn the game 'Clue' into a play and you have the masterfully entertaining 'Murder’s in the Heir!' Almost every character in this hilarious mystery has the weapon, opportunity and motive to commit the unseen murder. And it’s up to the audience to decide who actually did it! Each of the heirs to the tyrannical billionaire Simon Starkweather has the means and the motive to do away with him. Predictably, the lights go out, and Simon is discovered murdered. Simon III is determined to find the killer.
 
Seating for this show is at tables with room for 6 people.
Please bring along your own nibbles and drinks to be consumed during the performance.
Entry to tables at 7:30pm - Performance starts at 8:00pm Sharp
Cost for the tickets are $25 each.
 
You are encouraged to bring your own basket super and drinks to be consumed at the tables during the show.
We have tentatively booked for 48 people for the show and use this as a club meeting.  Please add your name to the sheet at the duty team this week or email me your interest. Look forward to having a large number of members and spouses coming along to a fun and social night at Eltham Little Theatre on 23 November.   Get a table together and BOOK this week!!
