Don’t the new seating platforms at Lower Eltham Park look great?  They will be well used by our sausage sizzle customers….look out for the Eltham Rotary logos to be attached shortly. Thank you to John O’Callaghan and his ‘apprentices’ Howard Turner and Michael Martin for a job well done.
 
Last week was a very refreshing light-hearted look at taxation laws and the efforts of some people to use them to their advantage. John Young’s case studies sounded like episodes of the Keystone Cops, with the antics of the ATO officers and tax avoiders. (I will never look the same way again at anyone using binoculars at the Kangaroo Ground lookout tower!). Just remember to be careful what you do with your mega cash winnings this Spring racing season.
 
On this note, Alison and Mike are setting-up our Cup Day/Mad Hats night as our perfect start to Cup Week celebrations with insights on picking the winners, sweeps, raffles and the crazy hats competition. Make sure you don’t miss this great fundraiser in support of the Australian Rotary Heath “Lift the Lid” campaign for research in mental illness.
 
I am looking forward to hearing Dr Bruce Anderson this week. Rotary has made an enormous contribution to world health through the Polio Plus program supporting research and vaccinations and there is certainly a good news story in the results being achieved.

This Week at Rotary

This Thursday marks World Polio Day and how fitting we have as our guest speaker is Dr Bruce Anderson a career scientist.  Dr Anderson is Jill Ramsay’s cousin and is also a member of the Rotary Club of Strathmore. Bruce has a special interest in vaccines to overcome diseases including polio.  He spoke at this year’s Rotary Conference and gave a very easy to follow polio eradication “state of the nation” type address and outlined – Where did we start, where are we now, where are we going in the efforts to knock polio over.  Dr Bruce Anderson will be a fantastic speaker so book in NOW!
 
The Chair for our World Polio Day night is our very own Dr Mac and Fine Master is “Bulldog” Mike Englefield.
 
 
Spring Carnival comes to Eltham
 
 
 
Coming up we have a great night planned for the night of 27 October for our Spring Carnival night.  This is a fundraising night so come prepared, bring some guests and be ready for some fun.
 
We have an interesting speaker who will help us once a year punters with giving us some tips with "Betting Demystified".  Nazarin Marchionda was the facilities manager at Caulfield racecourse for nearly 20 years and is an avid follower of racehorses and has studied what horses win and the form and how to pick a winner.  Come along and hear how you can improve your chances of picking a winner in the Cup or Oaks Day.
 
The night is also a special fundraising night for Rotary Health and so the cost of this meeting will be $40.  The additional $5 gives you an entry to our Spring Carnival Hat Competition with prizes for the female and male best hat on the night.  The proceeds raised will go to the Lift the Lid Rotary Health project for research on mental illness.
 
Bring your change as Paul Kelly will be asking to participate in a Melbourne Cup Sweep $1, $2 and $5 (if enough interest) and a raffle with prizes including 2 tickets to Emirates Cup Day, some wine and a hamper.  Raffle tickets will be $5 each or 3 for $10.

The Week that Was 13 October

Reports from the floor:
  1. Kevin Hadingham: Jim and Paul represented us at the Eltham & District Historical Society presenting a history spanning 1864 to 2016. A meeting next month on the ‘Lift the Lid’ Mental Health campaign. Still looking for a President Elect for 2018/19 if anyone wishes to nominate themselves. Mary McCleary doing well following surgery.
  2. Jill Ramsay: Volunteers still needed to assist in Town Square on Sat 22/Sat 29 Oct to sell raffle tickets for the charity Ready, Set, Go which supports premature babies and their families.
  3. Ian Toohill: Elections held for Interactor’s Executive at Montmorency S/C and role went to a Year 10 student.
  4. Graham Miles: The half marathon is this Sunday and hoping to complete the run between 8am and 9.45am. Thanks to all sponsors. Let Alison know who’s doing shorter distances and the walks.
  5. Ann Lynch: There continue to be issues around notification of attendance at meetings with frustration for restaurant staff. No dietary changes after Wednesday cut-off time. Please accept or decline by requested time.
  6. Dale Atkins: Still waiting on shirts for marathon – will either deliver or organise a meeting point to pick them up. Family day for Melbourne Cup Carnival on Cup Day at RC Kinglake Ranges from 12 noon until 6 pm. $20 per person. Poor response so far. Pay at the door next week.
  7. Alison Cooper: 27 Oct Melbourne Cup theme – prizes for fun hats as well as sweeps and raffles. Will be $40 a head with $5 going to ‘Lift the Lid’ campaign.
  8. Jules Aussems: 2 x places still available for New Year’s Eve party at $186 per person. Payment now required. Good news following petscan but treatment to continue every three weeks over next two years.
  9. Alan McCleary: Thanked John O’Callaghan and team for a brilliant job with seating at L.E.P. Work to do on garden at former Judge Book – now St Vincent’s. On Monday 17 Oct meeting of team leaders from local groups re support of Syrian refugees.
 
Speaker: John Young (Consulting Tax Lawyer) regaled us with humorous stories around efforts at tax evasion by various individuals and companies. Rotary Eltham Promo Opportunity..... can you help?

The Rotary Club of Eltham has an opportunity to support the Eltham Chamber of Commerce as well as promote Rotary and the Festival, in the Eltham Town Square.
 
When? Saturday October 22nd and Saturday October 29th
What time? 10.30am – 1.30pm (Pedestrian peak hour!)
Where? Outside Bakers Delight in the Town Square
 
What will we be doing?
The Eltham Traders’ raffle has been organised as a part of the Dudley Dash hill climb cycling event to be held on Sat. Nov 12th, in conjunction with the festival. The Traders’ raffle will raise funds for a new charity http://www.readystepgrow.org.au/ to support premature babies and their families in those early years. The raffle will be drawn at the festival, Sunday 13 Nov, on the Main Stage.
 
Rotary Club of Eltham has been asked to assist with the selling of the raffle tickets. This is a great opportunity for a few members (only need 3-4) to be in the Town Square, supporting the traders in their fundraising event as well as promoting RC of Eltham, membership opportunities and the Festival weekend.

Our Club History Project

This month is “Local History Month”. The October program of the Yarra Plenty Regional Library highlights over 21 events, including talks, tours, displays and workshops exploring the rich history of Eltham and Nillumbik, facilitated by passionate local historians. www.yprl.vic.gov.au
 
Last week’s meeting of the Eltham and DistrictHistorical Society (EDHS) celebrated the contribution of community groups in the history of Nillumbik. Ten minutes within the program was allocated for a ‘potted history’ of Eltham Rotary. Following earlier collaboration with Paul Gardner, Jim Phillips delivered a hitch hikers guide to the history of Eltham Rotary from the formation of Rotary International in 1905 through
to where we are today, capturing our key achievements on the way – all within 10ish minutes!
 
The EDHS members particularly appreciated Jim’s anecdotes and the linkages he made to significant characters and events in Eltham over the period.
 
Well done Jim and Paul, our club history project is in good hands.
