Last week I participated in the “Rotary in Action” program which airs 4pm to 5pm each Tuesday on 96.5 Inner FM radio. Interspersed with music throughout the hour, the presenter, Jill Weeks, and I discussed our Muskaan School project, the Bollywood Bedazzled Ball and the Grand Raffle. There was an advertisement for our sausage sizzle at Lower Eltham Park and that became the segue to a discussion of Aquabox and our broader Rotary Eltham programs. I now have a new station pre-set on my car radio and will be listening when I can to hear what other Rotary clubs are up to….it’s a valuable medium.
Wasn’t it great to see the front page of the Diamond Valley Leader featuring members of one of our Bollywood dance groups for the Bollywood Bedazzled Charity Ball? We hope this exposure will increase wider community awareness and support for this fundraiser.
Mayor Peter Clark is very keen to engage with Rotary. I met with him last week and he floated several concepts for possible roles Rotary could play in the community. Peter is a past member of the Rotary Club of Heidelberg and we look forward to having him to a club night in the near future.
Congratulations Victoria on your presentation last Thursday and the work you are doing to drive professional and community awareness of Delirium as a medical condition – not only locally, but nationally and Internationally. See you all at our 44th Birthday this week.

This week at Rotary will be a précis of the history of our Club through the eyes and recollections of Past Presidents Paul Gardner (1981-82), Terry Boocock (1988-89) and Ian Thomas (1995-96).

Alan McCleary: The $500 donated by us to an Iranian man for pharmaceuticals will now be used by Valley Care for others as this patient has been hospitalised.
John Skinner: International has requested assistance toward shipping of containers to East Timor - $500 has been donated. John has visited Jim Phillips at rehab - making slow progress and looking forward to coming home.
Gary Williams: On 18th May a ‘Eurovision Song Contest’ will be held with various tables representing different countries and performing two songs. Need to dress for the occasion. Will be prizes and need a good attendance.
Our speaker was Victoria Clague who presented on ‘Delirium’ which, despite being first described more than 2,500 years ago, remains frequently unrecognised and poorly understood. Delirium is an acute decline in brain function - a common, serious and often fatal disorder that affects many of the elderly population – particularly in hospitals and residential facilities. The Australasian Delirium Society joined forces with those in America and Europe to form the International Delirium Consortium, the mission of which is to raise awareness of the condition. In March this year it hosted the first ever ‘World Delirium Day’. Our thanks to Victoria for a very informative presentation.
1. Met with Lawrence Staub and his wife Sharon who updated us on his last visit to the Solomon Island and the current status of the Makira Project. The three main areas he will be concentrating on are health, water and the Copra Project in the Wangu Bay area of St Christabel Island. The water project at Rohua has been scoped and the health project is a continuation of an existing program especially in the treatment of whole body tinea and women’s health issues. Lawrence made a presentation to the club last week and his passion for the project was evident. The club made a donation of $500 to help with the Makira Project. Future involvement is yet to be decided.
2. Muskaan Bollywood Fundraiser is only a few weeks away and tickets are selling fast. Marions presentation to the club was great and shows what one person’s passion and commitment can achieve. The school in Bhopal is nearing completion and the Bollywood night along with one more LEP Barbeque will be the final fundraiser for the Hadinghams. A cheque for $500 was presented to Marion to go towards the school. A further $500 will be presented on the Bollywood night. Raffle tickets with great prizes are selling well.
3. Rotary Donations in kind 500th container to be shipped this century is bound for Timor Lest and DIK has asked clubs for support. Our committee has committed $500 to aid this shipment.
4. Ian Toohill has received a request from a Dominical Sister who we worked with in East Timor (Orphanage in Dili), for funds to go towards the purchase of a motor cycle to help her get around in her new posting at an orphanage in Ho Chi Min city in Vietnam. Ian is looking for approx. $1,000 to go towards the cost $700 from Monty Interact club, (total $1700).
5.Wheelchairs for Kids is locked in for Friday 14th September2017.Bigger and better is the plan with more participation from other youth groups and the wider community. Ian will speak to Director of Youth sally and Director of Community Alan and Ken Paynter re Scouts to encourage wider participation this year.
This is an invitation to attend our upcoming comedy at Hoyts Greensborough. Come and join us and enjoy a good laugh while helping with youth in our local area including providing a ramp for wheelchair people to enjoy time at “Riding for the Disabled”.
