President's Message

As we hit mid-February and I realise that the year that I am President of our Rotary Club has only 4 1/2 months to go, I am continually amazed at the support members give in making this Club so wonderful. I am sure there are a few who are saying ' Good, we only have to put up with him a little longer' but I am amazed at our attendances and what seems to be such a happy feeling in the Club. I am very grateful for the support you have given to me and to our Board.
Did you know we are all members of a great organisation that is celebrating its 111th birthday on Tues 23rd February.

Last Thursday we heard from an amazing speaker - Sue Gunningham - and I am sure we all left The Common in awe of her strength of character after the tragedy she has experienced and continues to deal with.

Thank you to Gary Williams for arranging to have Sue address us and thank you to Graeme Hardiman for handling the evening in such a sensitive way. I am looking forward to another interesting night on Thursday; enjoy your week.

President David.

PLEASE ADVISE YOUR APOLOGY OR GUEST(S) TO CLUB SECRETARY
ANN LYNCH ajlynch@bigpond.com or Mob: 0419 008 759 BY MIDDAY WEDNESDAY 17TH FEBRUARY, 2016

We were gripped last week by the heart wrenching personal story of Sue Gunningham. This week, a dramatic change of pace as we meet Melissa Pavlovic, Owner/Manager, Shadow's Boxing, Eltham. Mel joined Rick Breese to start Shadow's in 2007. The Gym, which was the dream of Rick, an elite Boxing trainer, has been dynamic, successfully trained pro fighters to titles & participated in the Local Community. Shadow's Boxing have supported the Eltham Festival since 2012. We will learn plenty about Boxing, fitness programs and individual Competitor success stories. Mel will bring along one of her team members & the two will demonstrate a few moves!!  Bound to be very entertaining….will some Club Members get to be Boxing "guinea pigs"?

Pres David will make sure we all behave, especially Chair for the evening, Ken Paynter.  The Finemaster is Kevin Darling Filby and he should have little trouble outpacing Max's "tell a story" segment last week.

Venue is The Common, 6.15pm for 6.45pm. Cost $35 per head for two course meal; drinks at bar prices.

Reports from the floor:
* Brett Linsell: The BBQ at St John’s raised $526. Upcoming events for Rotoractors include a speaker from FIFA on Monday 15 Feb and a Trivia evening in May with the theme of education. Would be great to have at least one table from RC Eltham
* John Skinner: Montmorency SC is involved in fundraising for Wheelchairs for Kids – a Rotary International project
* Ann Lynch: Members are asked to update their details for the District Directory. Flyers available on tables for the garden party luncheon at Cruden Farm which is being organised by RC Nunawading
* Trevor Smith: Still not too late to register for the conference and accommodation is still available. Don’t forget to bring along yellow shirts
* Ken Paynter:  The fundraising BBQ at Trevor & Wendy Smith’s home last week was a great success - meat was provided at cost by Stephens Meats, Eltham. Three members of our club are participating in the 650 km bike ride – Alan McCleary, Trevor Smith and Ken. Shillinglaw Café has donated a $50 voucher and is perhaps a prospective supporter of the Festival
* Peter Roden: Reported that Past President Nigel Bell has some serious health issues at present
Speaker:  This week marks the 7th anniversary of Black Saturday, the day on which our speaker - Sue Gunningham – lost her partner, Barry Johnston, to the Kinglake bush fires. Sue has recorded her story in a book published late last year entitled ‘ All the Days After’ which describes the events and aftermath of this tragedy. It is a story of loss, love and resilience and it is almost impossible to imagine how Sue has not only survived but is building a future beyond such an horrific trauma. We thank her for her courage in sharing her experiences with us and for her generosity in donating part of the proceeds of her book to Australian Rotary Health for its mental health initiatives.
