DISTRICT CONFERENCE 2020
As emailed to all members, the District Conference for 2020 has been cancelled by the District Governor, Brian Peters. Brian has made this difficult decision in the interest of the health and wellbeing of all attending Rotarians and their families.

WEHI UPDATE BY BRIGETTE DUCKWORTH
Last Thursday Brigette gave the club an update on her PhD studies, involving memory cells and killer T cells. The team she heads is making good progress in understanding where memory cells are located in the lymph nodes and how they work. Brigette recently gave a talk on her project and won best presentation. Well done Brigette.
We had a number of guests present – Phil Arandjelovic (Brigette's partner), Marlene and Ash McFarlane, and Jess & Josh Ogden. Also present were Enid O'Brien (Gordon), Lorraine Englefield and prospective member Mike Lynch.
Brigette gave a great insight into how her work was progressing and how the money we provide towards her scholarship is used. She gave a very informative talk and in a manner that all members present could understand. At the conclusion of her talk she fielded a number of questions including some about WEHI and the coronavirus. All in all it was another great night topped off by Marlene McFarlane and myself presenting a cheque for $5000 towards her PhD for this year. The David McFarlane Charity Golf Day is fast approaching, with part of the proceeds ($3000 from the last golf day) going towards Brigette’s PhD studies.

BOARD MEETING
Our March Board meeting was held at the Monty RSL. The meal was good and the prices very reasonable. They also provided the use of their board meeting room at no cost. This is much appreciated by myself and the Board. The Board resolved to donate a total of $3,700 to Rotary Health. This was derived from Ken's barbeque, Machan's and Lunch on the Deck at Rye. Well done Ken Paynter. A great effort for Rotary Health.
Foundation needs your help. Whilst funds were received from Lunch on the Deck at Rye, we are still way below where we were last year and are asking for every Rotarian every year to donate $100 or more towards Foundation. This money comes back to the club in the form of District Grants (of which we applied for and received $5000 this year), so any support would be greatly appreciated.

THURSDAY 19 MARCH 2020
I have decided that there will be no Rotary meeting this Thursday and the Board will discuss when our next regular weekly meeting will occur. We will keep you updated via emails and the Bulletin. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic is currently changing day by day and the Board will respond accordingly.

COVID-19 UPDATE
Rotary Clubs have been advised that Rotary run festivals and barbeques will not be covered at this time. This is in place until 30 April 2020. We have also been advised that the Diamond Valley Miniature Railway will suspend operations until 30 April 2020. As all members would be aware the situation around the coronavirus is a fluid one, and changing day by day. We will update club members as soon as we become aware of any more changes.

PASSING OF JIM PHILLIPS
It is with much sadness that I can inform the club of the passing of long serving member Jim Phillips, early on Monday morning. Jim has been a stalwart of the club for a long time and will be fondly remembered for his outspoken and sometimes radical views. He was quick with a retort and liked to stir the pot. Memories of his time as the Bulletin editor spring to mind. I know the club will join with me in passing on our sincere condolences to Suki and the boys.

In conclusion, I wish for all our members to stay safe, look after one another and keep well.

Cheers,

President John

This Week at Rotary
This week at Rotary regarding the Club meetings and speaker program

I am hoping that this message finds you and your family all well and healthy.  These last few weeks have been challenging and I am sure the weeks ahead will be one of uncertainty as the virus takes its toll on all aspects of Australian's lives.

The decision to cancel the club meeting this week is not one that was taken lightly. As you will have seen with the recent messages sent out to members from District and Rotary International, they have asked Rotary clubs to err on the side of caution in relation to having meetings or events.  Rotarian's typically are in the target group and are at higher risk for serious illness from COVID-19 because of age or because of a serious long-term health problem.  In saying this Rotarian's are also smart and resourceful people and understand it is extra important to take actions to reduce the risk of getting sick with the disease.

The Board will be discussing the issue of whether to continue with Club meetings re-starting next Thursday - 26 March, or to continue to cancel them for the next couple of weeks.  At this stage no decision has been made.  The discussion on arrangements for ANZAC Day will also be on the table.

Club meetings are an important part of being a Rotarian and I understand a lot of you will not be happy with the cancellation of this week's meeting but we also have to listen to what is happening and to be guided by those who have more understanding of the current situation.

Stay safe, help where you can, look out for your family and friends, check your elderly neighbours and anyone you meet at the shops.  I hope that my message next week will be more positive.
