24 May 2018
We celebrated our 45th anniversary in style with a belated birthday party - and what a party we had! With 20 Past Presidents and a past District Governor present or represented, the celebration was a great expression of the fellowship that we all enjoy in the Club. We reminisced about many of the Club’s special moments and characters and heard about some of our history from Paul Gardner, Gordon Birch and Victoria Claque. Special moments included welcoming the McFarlane family and receiving a cheque for $3000 from Josh Ogden and Ash McFarlane - proceeds from the David McFarlane Golf Day. And what better way to start off proceedings than to officially induct a new member, Diana Drysdale. Welcome to the Rotary Club of Eltham, Diana. Special thanks must go to Gary Williams our MC for the evening, Mike Englefield, and Mike Wetzler for the comedic moments and Alison Cooper who put the event together. Also to the 78 people who attended and made our birthday very special.
The Festival Committee met last week to start planning for this year’s Festival. The 2018 Festival website is now up and running and we are taking stallholders bookings. Festival Director Dale, Secretary Ann and I met with Ted Brierley from the Diamond Valley Railways during the week and were pleased to hear that DVR will again participate in this year’s event - running their trains on both days of the festival and sharing the cost of a shuttle bus to and from Eltham Lower Park. Ken Paynter and Michael Maloney have been busy already talking to potential festival sponsors.
Cheers, President Judy

This Week at Rotary
After a wonderful celebration last week with the club's 45th anniversary and catching up with past members, we have a guest speaker from the Rotary Club of Doncaster - Leon Moore.  Leon is involved in the club project LAARFS - the Laughing All Ability Really Friendly Singers.
Leon found that people who have suffered a stroke or other disabling conditions such as dementia, are able to express themselves by singing.  LAARFS is a weekly session for people to attend and where they enjoy participating and joining others singing in a choir. Come along and hear how singing can transform someones life and help with rehabilitation and quality of life.

Career Interviews at St Helena S/C
Year 10 Mock Interview dates for 2018: Tuesday 19 June, Thursday 21 June and Friday 22 June.
Thank you for volunteering and assisting us in our Mock Interview program back in 2016. If you and any other Rotarians are able to assist us again for the upcoming Year 10 Mock Interviews in June, it would be greatly appreciated.
Each interviewer would interview between 9 - 12 students each in one day (depending on your available times), for one of the following job roles:
1.    Apprentice Hairdresser
2.       Apprentice Landscaper
3.       Marketing Assistant
4.       Retail Assistant – Eyewear
5.       Carpentry Apprentice
6.       Trainee I.T Service Desk Support
7.       Hospitality Team Member (Grill’d Burgers)
8.       Sports Centre Office Assistant
9.       Auto Parts Assistant
10.   Graphic Artist Assistant
11.   Childcare Assistant
12.   Animal Day Spa Assistant

Each job is an entry level position for someone with minimal experience or skills, so looking for generic employability skills, confident interview manner and a passion evident.Please indicate;
1.       If you can assist in any, or all, of the three days in June
2.       Times you can attend
3.       Your employment background and any job listed you would prefer to be a key interviewer for
4.       Dietary requirements (we will supply morning tea and lunch)
5.       If yes, you can be an interviewer – please supply us with your Working With Children check copy/details
Interview Questions:
o   Tell us about yourself
o   What are three positives a past employer or a teacher would say about you?
o   Describe a time when you have had to handle a difficult situation, customer or work colleague in the past.
o   What would you describe as your best skill strengths?
·         Their answers should include their key points, links to current examples of demonstrating those skills and ways these skills would be relevant in the job they are applying for.
·         You will provide them with some feedback after the final question and give them some insight into how they could improve their responses, body language and preparation for future interviews.
·         An evaluation sheet is attached and a copy of the job ads. Hopefully a teacher will sit in with you and do the evaluation sheet as you conduct the interview with them.
·         In the event that I am unable to supply a second interviewer, a teacher will be floating in the room for support if needed.
