16th February 2017
Thanks to everyone who participated in last week’s club assembly. A big challenge is always “effective communication”. How do we best keep all members informed and engaged in the running of the club and our service programs? Are members being heard? Club assemblies provide just one forum for feedback and discussion between the Board and members, but only so much can be discussed within such constrained time.

However, we also have lots of informal discussions across the tables on club nights, at social functions, at coffee gatherings during the week, while sizzling sausages and at the various catch-ups between members. Sometimes concerns are shared, sometimes great ideas are developed for the club or our programs, but invariably these don’t find their way to the Board for consideration and possible implementation. Don’t lose the momentum, pass on the feedback to a Board member. Personally, I’m always pleased to share a chat, maybe over a coffee?  We want to be a club of Rotary in action, not Rotary inaction!

This week we honour our best friend in blue, Sgt Mitchell, as our nominee for the District’s community policing award. “Mitch” epitomises the spirit of the award. We know his contribution to the successful running of our Festival and the Anzac Day Service are tremendous, but they are just the tip of the iceberg when looking at his contribution across our community. Come and celebrate a gem of our community who helps make Eltham Eltham.

Cheers, President Kevin

This Week at Rotary
This week we announce and honour our Club's nomination for the District 9790 “Peter Toomey Police Award”. The award recognises the recipients commitment and contribution to his/her local community and recognises the contribution of policeman Peter Toomey to the community. We will also hear about the origins and significance of the award.  Our awardee will be presented with a Club certificate of recognition of his/her service to the people of Nillumbik. In addition, the nominee's details have been submitted to District 9790 to be considered for receipt of the 2017 District 9790 Peter Toomey Police Award which will be formally announced and presented at the upcoming District 9790 Conference in Shepparton.

Chair for the evening is Alan McCleary, Finemaster Max Lee.

Update from Margaret Lane on Membership
Here is an update from our Membership Chair, Margaret. Next week we'll hear from Irene on Foundation... Ed
Currently the membership of the Rotary Club of Eltham consists of 58 Active members and one Honorary member. Rotary year to date, we have seen the induction of two new members. Currently there are another two prospective members who will be attending over the next couple of weeks.  Hopefully we are on the way to meeting our target of five.

Both  Kaye and I would like to thank all members for inviting guests to our Membership Information evening which was held last year. It is invariably through the promotion of Rotary values by existing members that we gain new members. Prospective members join Rotary to make a difference, and they stay because of the friendships they make.  Engagement with new members by experienced members is vital in establishing these friendships and maintaining their interest in Rotary.
