Despite the intimidating weather, we managed to deliver yet another fantastic family Festival to our community. The 9 months of thorough and detailed planning by Jill and the Festival Committee and the teamwork of the Eltham Rotary family throughout the weekend paid handsome dividends. Each and every one of over 70 Rotarians, partners, friends and prospective members who participated deserve recognition – you were all great ambassadors for Rotary… and no doubt, by example, triggered others in the community to consider Rotary membership.
Just as the Spring Carnival was the lead-up to our festival, the US presidential elections were a lead-up event for our own presidential nomination process! President Nominee Jill Ramsay is an outstanding Rotarian and, as we have just witnessed with the Festival, a very competent leader. The future of the club in 2018-19 is in very safe hands!
We are now in the home straight toward Christmas and Summer holidays with a program of fun and interest-filled nights, capped-off by our Christmas celebration dinner and party on 15th December. This Thursday we first learn how we as Rotarians can welcome and support the refugees coming to Eltham and then we also have light hearted reflections on the sizzling fun of sausage sizzle fundraising with the annual Mr & Mrs Snag Awards. The Festival has now finished and once again our Cake Stall presented beautifully to all regardless of the inclement weather. Unfortunately our sales were not as high as other years, totalling just over $700.00 having everything sold before 2.00pm. Perhaps this was brought about as sadly the number of contributions were decidedly less.
I would like to thank those who did send through some cakes or other saleable items also a big thank you to those ladies who joined me on the Stand to help. In particular the help given by Lorraine Englefield is very special, thanks Lorraine, your contributions each year really make our Cake Stall.

This week, on an extremely serious note, we are privileged to welcome as our guest speaker Sheree Limbrick (Deputy CEO Catholic Care) to tell us about how local volunteers such as the RC of Eltham might get involved in the assimilation of the soon to arrive Syrian refugees at the St Vincent's Care Services accommodation facility in Eltham. Sheree will surely add some positivity to the challenges facing the refugees and the Eltham community.

After a long build-up, the red carpet night has finally arrived with this weeks meeting presenting the awarding of the highly coveted 2016 Mr & Mrs Snag “golden snags”. If you had difficulty digesting the rubbish associated with the US election process, more indigestion is on the cards this week when Ron “Banger” Manison and his relatively young apprentice Mike “Wiener” Martin recall the memorable highs (and no doubt lows) of this years LEP BBQ efforts of members, their families and friends.
As this iconic event is likely to be a sell out, get in early by booking your tickets at our BBQ food suppliers Tip Top Meats or Bakers Delight Eltham. The first 100 tickets purchased will go into the draw for 100kg of snags.
And remember…….sausage jokes are the wurst!!
Chairperson will be our own 'Ken the Hawk Paynter' while Paul Gardner will be active as Fine Master.
The meeting commenced with the AGM chaired by President Kevin. Lou Bolzonello presented a financial report to the club. President Kevin then reported that the Presidential Nominating Committee proposes to nominate Jill Ramsay as President for Rotary Year 2018/2019. This news was warmly received by the club. President Elect Judy Sharp announced some members of her 2017/2018 Board including Kevin Hadingham (Vice President), Jill Ramsay (President Elect), Ann Lynch (Secretary), Michael Martin (Treasurer), with the remaining positions TBD.
The second half of the evening was chaired by Jill Ramsay. Nick Ikonomou introduced our RYLA attendees Sam Wilson and Amanda Green, who both said a few words. Amanda is from Zimbabwe and is on Rotary exchange.
Ann Lynch presented Jill Ramsay with a gift of appreciation from the Festival committee.
Jill Ramsay reported that Alison was back in hospital but doing OK.
There were no other reports from the floor nor a fine session.
The meeting concluded with three Festival Planning focus groups.
The RCE Tug of War team went one better this year to achieve second place in the Festival Tug-of-War.
The team (Michael M, Paul K, Dale, Nick, Clayton, Brett, Dave and Paul C) comfortably dispatched the CFA and SES teams in the preliminary heats, only to come unstuck against the Eltham Rugby Club in the final.
Vicki Mackrell was a great support to the team, offering to hold Michael Martin's thingy while he competed. On a slippery pitch, there were some unfortunate casualties including yours truly who twice ended up on his @rse.
The Rotary Club of Kinglake Ranges is sponsoring young drivers at Murcott's Defensive Driving Course at Sandown Racecourse on 27th November.
If you think your child or grandchild would benefit from the course, its only $50, because the Rotary Club of Kinglake Ranges covers the other $150.
Kinglake have invested $2,000 to cover up to 20 participants but have only had 5 sign up to-date. They don't mind where the participants come from, they just want to see their money keeping young people alive and safe.
