One month into the new Rotary year already - time flies when you are having fun.
It was lovely to catch up with Sue "Bam Bam' Schreiber again last week and hear her speak so passionately about her art and the direction it is taking. Her exhibition is on display at Montsalvat until 7 August so there's still time to go and see her work.
This week we welcome the DG Bernie Bott and Assistant Governor Greg Paull. Bernie and Greg are visiting the Aquabox shed, then meeting the Board prior to our regular club meeting. Boardies, you are welcome to join Dale and me at the Aquabox shed at 5pm or else meet us at Third Chapter at 5.45pm.
Have you visited our facebook pages recently? Sally Squires, our PR Director has been doing a great job posting regularly on our Club and Festival facebook pages and growing our following. The festival facebook page has 2244 'likes' and the Club facebook page has 209 'likes'. Every time you go in and 'like' or comment on one of our posts, it spreads the Rotary Club of Eltham message. So please support Sally and the Club by either 'liking' the pages yourself or getting the younger folk in the family to do so. Some of our posts have reached over 1000 people so it's a really effective way of reaching new audiences.
I was lucky enough to be on BBQ duty this week in mostly glorious sunshine, with a great team (John and Roma O'Callaghan and Andrew Sheppard). With very appreciative customers who kept on coming well beyond 2pm we had an enjoyable and productive day. The park was buzzing and it really felt like spring was on the way. Thanks to Lyn Truran, Paul Kelly and Mike Wetzler and the Community team under Alan McCleary's leadership who are instrumental to the BBQ effort happening each week.

How wonderful to Sue Schrieber back at our Rotary club meeting albeit as our guest speaker. A fantastic night to catch up with Sue and great to see her artwork and where this new career is taking her. Don't forget to go to her exhibition at Montslvatt which closes on 7 August.
This week we have a change of pace with the 9790 District Governor - Bernie Bott visiting our club for the first time. Bernie will highlight his plans for the Rotary District 9790 in 2017-18 which of course includes the annual conference to be held next year. Bernie is a down to earth fellow with a good sense of humour. He has a goal that at the end of his year as District Governor the legacy that he wishes to leave our district is ‘Happy Clubs, Happy District’. If that can be achieved by working more collaboratively together, between clubs and across the district, then the exchange of ideas, the friendships created and the goals that are achieved can only lead to happier more engaged Rotarians.Come along this week and meet Bernie and his mascot.
Judy Sharp: Next week the District Governor – Bernie Bott – will attend our meeting. Will be at the Aquabox Shed at 5pm and then meeting here at 5.45pm with Board members.
Mike Englefield: Festival update – entertainment well on way to being organised including various stages. Eltham College – one of our sponsors – want 3 or 4 youth bands involved. Youth stage will be organised again by Erin Rose. Community stage will include mix of music and calisthenics. May have professional MC to run Sunday’s program – possibly Craig Huggins from 104.5 who would plug the Festival on radio and social media. Royal Flying Doctor Service will have a display including a mock-up of plane.
Dale Atkins: Has had a photo from Margaret Lane in Coolum from Gloria whose son received his special chair from us last year. Gloria very grateful and thinks of the generosity of RCE every day.
Alan McCleary: Request from Gemma at NE Link Authority to organise BBQ from 4pm to 8pm on 15 August for approx.100 people. Catering fee of $1,000 and any profit to RCE.
Jules Aussems: Jules has been to Yarrawonga with Trevor to organise accommodation etc. for the District Conference at Club Mulwala from 22nd to 25th March 2018. Investigating the possibility of the ‘Paradise Queen’ for the Friday evening dinner which would include food and drink and a cruise. There are 40 x seats booked for the New Year’s Eve dinner at $195 per head. 12 x bookings already and final numbers and payment needed by September.
Ian Toohill: On 17 August a combined Wheelchair for Kids update and the annual visit of Japanese exchange students and families. Guest speaker from Disability Sports and Recreation. Fun day at Montmorency S/C to raise funds for homeless women as well as for the Orange Sky laundry program for the homeless.
Speaker: This week our presenter was Sue (Bam Bam!) Schreiber who has been a generous contributor to, and sponsor of, the Eltham Festival – particularly in organising the wonderful fireworks displays. Sue is the owner of Katz Art Design studio and currently has an exhibition at Montsalvat of exquisite small works on scratchboard depicting birds of prey. It is currently showing at The Boulevard Montsalvat and runs until 7 August. Sue is passionate about Australian wildlife and designs artwork used for wildlife promotion and to create funding for wildlife preservation. Patterns and colours have always been a central part of her work which has led to new and diverse opportunities in designing for industry as well as co-ordinating Pyrotechnic displays.Sue’s presentation was fascinating and the artwork she shared with us outstanding.
The Diamond Valley Photographic Society’s Photographic Exhibition will coincide with the Diamond Creek Rotary Town Fair which is being held on the Saturday 9th Sept.
