15 February 2018
Some 60 Eltham Rotarians and partners enjoyed a lovely day on Sunday 11 February at the Rye home of Graeme and Lyn Hardiman overlooking Port Phillip Bay. We all enjoyed Lyn’s wonderful catering, their lovely home and the ambience of our surroundings overlooking the Bay.  Many donated items were raffled including a silent auction prize of a weekend in a two bedroom cabin at Ocean Grove which raised $825. Thanks to everyone who donated raffle prizes with particular thanks to the Englefields who donated the silent auction prize.  Congratulations to our three intrepid cyclists who rode from Eltham to Rye in 6 hours. In all we raised over $2800 - $500 of which will be donated to Australian Rotary Health and the remainder to Foundation.  Many thanks again to Graeme and Lyn for a wonderful day.
Jules Aussems has been working hard to co-ordinate accommodation and entertainment for those attending District 9790 Conference in six weeks time in Yarrawonga/Mulwala. Please let him know if you are intending to attend conference and if you require one of the accommodation options he has on hold. He has arranged a wonderful Sunset Cruise on Lake Mulwala on Friday 23 March and now needs those who wish to participate to go onto Trybooking to book their seats. We have opened up the booking to other Clubs in our District so get in quickly to reserve your place. Please see the flyer below for details. Thanks Jules for all your work.
Con and Ken attended Diamond Valley Learning Centre last week and presented them with a cheque for the purchase of Chrome book computers for use by Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning students.  $2000 of the funding was received through a District Grant and matched a donation of $2000 from Rotary Club of Eltham. Additional funding was raised by the students from DVLC when they manned the BBQ late last year. The Chrome books are essential for the students to be able to complete their education.
The Board met at Heidelberg Golf Club last Wednesday (7/2). Amongst other things, we finalised a survey to go out to members shortly using Survey Monkey. Please let me or Secretary Ann know if you need to complete a paper version of the survey or need assistance with the on-line version. We’d like as many people as possible to give us feedback which will help guide the Board in planning for the next Rotary year. We also finalised the half yearly report which will be distributed to members on Thursday and approved guidelines, developed by PP Kevin Hadingham, for the nomination by Club members of potential candidates for PHF Awards.See you on Thursday. Cheers,
President Judy

The Great Bicycle Ride to Rye
This Week at Rotary
Long term Eltham resident Dr Jenny Graves’ PHD is in molecular biology.  As an evolutionary geneticist Jenny works on Australian animals, to discover how genes and chromosomes and regulatory systems evolved, and how they work in all animals including humans. Her laboratory uses this unique perspective to explore the origin, function and fate of human sex genes and chromosomes, and famously predicted the disappearance of the Y chromosome. (What – no men?)
Jenny is Vice Chancellor’s Fellow at La Trobe University, Professor Emeritus at ANU and “Thinker in Residence” at University of Canberra. In 2017 she became the first woman to be a sole winner of the Prime Minister’s Science Prize.
Jenny has kindly agreed to come and speak here on 15th Feb on “Sex, genomes and the future of men!” You are welcome to bring partners to this special opportunity.
